Innovation isn't always shiny new (expensive) or complicated, it can simply be using something commonplace in a new way. The £101 million of new funding announced for Active Travel today is of course welcome to help address the staggering 1.5B car trips being made every year for journeys of less than a mile. But what is really exciting, is things like the side road zebra trials moving to the conclusion, a process started 4 years ago in Greater Manchester. Allowing the well-understood stripes to be used where they can do the most good, at the mouth of side roads, showed huge benefits in those on-road trials conducted in Tameside. 65% more drivers stopped for people to cross and 8:10 parents and carers preferred it. This is a simple, very affordable and fast way to transform the school run, give more kids transport independence and reduce stress for those that are a little slower to cross. Like many places across the country, Greater Manchester has committed to making active travel the foundation of its transport network, a move that will also increase its catchment for public transport 10 fold, so secure vital bus and train services. And their approach is working. Since that video was filmed in 2021 the number of very short car journeys in the region have dropped by a staggering *100 million* trips a year. Imagine if we use simple methods like this across the whole country and make cycling, walking and wheeling easier. We will all win. https://lnkd.in/eSJRy4pb
Eight in 10 parents and carers say zebra crossings on side roads would make them feel safer walking their children to school. Today we've announced new side road zebra trials to help West Midlands Combined Authority and Greater Manchester Combined Authority with their devolution deals. Collett Team Successfully delivers 10 Power PODs to Germany! 🇩🇪 Each POD, measuring 18.2m L x 4.3m W x 3.8m H and weighing 46Te, posed a unique challenge. The project commenced at Anord Mardix facility in Blackburn, where each unit was loaded onto 5 & 6 axle step frame trailers. From start to finish, the journey spanned over 800 miles, travelling through multiple international borders. All units were transhipped from UK transport to DE transport due to road height restrictions in the EU. The transhipment of goods was essential as UK trailers cannot be used in the EU. Our International Projects department handled all aspects of the move via a combination of Collett owned equipment and our well-established relationships with EU service providers. #ExpertsInMotion #HeavyTransport #InternationalTransport #InternationalLogistics

Starting my 4th year as a delegate for DarkSky International. Glad to say that the Forest Preserve of DuPage County, Glen Ellyn Park District, Wheaton Park District and Geneva Park District have passed Dark Sky resolutions and, most recently, State Senator Laura Ellman will sponsor an Illinois statute titled "Responsible Outdoor Lighting Act." Also, we now have a Chicago Chapter, DarkSky Chicago, www.idachicago.org. If man was causing us to lose so much natural sunlight during the day, would we address it by simply flipping a switch? Using better outdoor light fixtures? Using more amber light bulbs? Using less bright bulbs?

🌉 Do you remember when Fern Hollow Bridge collapsed in #Pittsburgh? Thankfully, no one died on that snowy January morning, but the event quickly sparked headlines and a visit from President Biden. In the wake of the infamous event, city planners were suddenly on a tight timeline to rebuild the bridge, which had served as a critical connector between neighborhoods, stretching through one of the city's popular parks. Meanwhile, insufficient walking and #biking infrastructure leading to the bridge had created dangerous conditions for non-motorists, and planners hoped to take this opportunity to not only rebuild the bridge, but improve #RoadSafety for everyone who would use it. See how City of Pittsburgh rebuilt a new and improved Fern Hollow Bridge in under 1 year with big data analytics that accelerated traffic analysis. #transportation #TransportationPlanning #bridges https://lnkd.in/gt7ECP8N

2024 is coming in strong! Let's go! Backstory: We moved to Detroit in 2020 (for me it was a homecoming). However, what we were unprepared for were the city's air quality issues. Detroit is plagued by some of the most harmful and pervasive forms of air pollution, including particle pollution and ozone. This has resulted in high rates of asthma and other respiratory problems. The effect on me has been direct and personal. Within a year of living here, I began to suffer from heightened respiratory issues, such as increased congestion and sinus problems, and these have persisted. What we are doing about it: If you know me then you know I am a fierce advocate for Detroit. I sing the praises of this great city... and I'm also honest - and vocal and active - about where we need to do and be better. Air quality is one important area. We urgently need to increase green spaces and implement infrastructure that promotes cleaner air. Additionally, adopting pro-air quality policies and zoning regulations that safeguard and improve the health and well-being of both residents and visitors is crucial. That is why this year, as part of our neighborhood advocacy, we planted 130 trees in Hubbard Richard (with more to come) and also reached out to JustAir Solutions Darren Riley Sarah Craft to see what we could do to get better data through air quality monitoring. That initial conversation inspired a broader effort to launch an air quality pilot in Hubbard Richard, Corktown, and North Corktown where - in partnership with Michigan Central and others - we are taking a tri-neighborhood, system-level approach to improving our air quality. This begins by first getting accurate data (which JustAir will provide us through 6 air quality monitors, dispersed across the area) and leveraging that data to enhance awareness of air quality and propel solutions. Let's make Detroit the city with the best air quality in the world! On a higher level, this is an example for how you citizen: 1. Identify what you care about / what your community/neighborhood needs 2. Get involved in your community 3. Help identify and mobilize solutions for the thing you care about/what your community needs Reach out to me if you need a brainstorm/thought/idea partner on how to awaken and activate your citizen within.
On Monday, we co-hosted a community workshop with City of Detroit residents living in the Transportation Innovation Zone (TIZ) at Newlab @ Michigan Central. We're working with partners to install six #airquality monitors across the TIZ and residents helped identify high priority monitoring locations across their neighborhood. Learn more about the project at https://lnkd.in/d5TC6B5a Thank you to our collaborators for a wonderful event!
