Deirdre Parker’s Post

Delighted to spend much of today with postgraduate researchers of the College of Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Sciences in UCC enrolled on the PG7002 module, entitled Career Development, the Job Market and Viva Preparation for End-Stage PhD Students. This innovative postgraduate training module is a unique collaboration between Dr. Silvia Ross, Head of School of Languages, Literature and Cultures and a number of UCC Career Services professionals over the years, including McCarthy (Careers), Brenda Nestor and myself. PhD students learn how to: ✔ Build an online presence to enhance their personal profile ✔ Apply proactive career planning, career research and job discovery techniques ✔  Recognise what is required to apply for academic roles, including a professional dossier ✔ Prepare compelling applications, CVs and cover letters for roles beyond academia ✔  Prepare effectively for job interviews, including preparation for competency-based interviews The learning activities and assessments are experiential simulations of the most common elements of the hiring cycle for both academic and non-academic roles. It was a pleasure to work with such an engaged and lively group of researchers with exciting futures ahead. #phds #careers #ucccareers #collaboration #employability
