“The government now faces a ‘quiet crisis.’ The problem stems from two factors.”
“One is an unprecedented exodus of high-caliber workers from federal service. The US is experiencing difficulties retaining civilians in the face of fierce competition for talent.”
“The second factor is government recruiting failure. In a stark reversal of historic norms, US agencies now find themselves unable to attract, or even interest, the most talented workers in the country.“
Those statements could have been written today, but they were actually taken from an Air Force Magazine article from July 1989 🤯
Fast forward to today, and it’s disheartening to see that we’re still grappling with the same challenges. Despite decades of awareness, the government remains unable to retain and recruit top talent effectively, and with many roles being open to internal talent only, it seems that they might not have learned from the lessons of the past.
While the Department of Defense grapples with recruiting and retention strategies, we are witnessing the rise of contractors who are providing innovators a place to continue to serve the country, just with better pay and benefits, better tech and determination towards bringing velocity to the Warfighter.
