While working in-house or in an agency both have advantages, I have learnt over the last decade that a well-run agency can, at times, offer more to a business in terms of out-of-the-box thinking. Don’t get me wrong; a billion-dollar business would have the best of the best who innovate and push the boundaries on their roster, but not every business is Nike or Amazon. Those that aren’t the 0.1% need to hire people who are great at their job but probably aren't world changers for specific roles, which can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars a year in salaries or need support from an external entity. The difference between the two is that those internal roles tend to be very siloed. They tend to focus on what their role entails (and so they should, given that is what they are paid to do) with blinders on, with little or no collaboration with other departments or areas of the business. At times, this can lead to very one-dimensional thinking, potentially doing the same thing over and over again. Well-run agencies (and let me harp on the WELL-RUN part) have the ability to not only focus on the task at hand and deliver exceptional results but with so much collaboration occurring on a daily basis, they can look at things from different angles, potentially coming up with a strategy that blows all other competitors out of the water (sometimes at a fraction of the cost of hiring someone in-house). While I am not saying that one is better than the other for every scenario, having access to an agency could potentially be the catalyst to push a business into the next stage of growth and success. I spoke to 8 CD's last week, all working on global accounts who are consistently frustrated with the red tape, the squeezing of ideas, the lack of autonomy, lack of alignment across continents, lack of making, etc. As a result, they want out - which is unsurprising. It's clear that creatives, strategists, account handlers alike, just want to make, make, make. And most will go above and beyond to do so too. MY EXPERIENCE IN CENTRALIZED vs DECENTRALIZED DECISIONS As I am getting older, I am becoming more interested in business culture and organisation structures. I am especially interested in how decisions are taken throughout an organisation. Strategic execution is the second part after strategic planning, my favourite subject. So let me explain to you how decisions were made when I worked in Mango Man. Everyone in Man’s design team (wrongly called Célula Autónoma de Diseño - autonomous design group) followed the guidance of the head of Man who bought the samples and decided about what to buy, only then designers proposed little amendments who, again had to be authorized. This way, all the product had the same mood. On the other hand, when I worked in Zara Man, designers and buyers had total freedom to propose what they wanted and, the whole buying department team decided what to buy/not to buy and how much. The head of the department used to have the leading voice, but did not vetoed nor authorized. Some buyers, at their own risk they even bought before team presentation. This way, the creative process brought more different ideas and decisions were quicker. They were different manners of taking the decisions.
