Is your company ready for the new sustainability policy changes that will reshape the fashion industry in 2024? From Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) by the EU, requiring brands to pay for end-of-life waste treatment to Digital Product Passports to provide detailed sustainability information to consumers, the “Fashion Retail Industry” is facing new regulations aimed at holding companies accountable for their environmental and social impacts - whether it is clothing ending up in landfills, accusations of modern slavery, rivers choked with pollutants and clothing soaked with chemicals. Measures like the UK’s Green Claims Code and the EU’s Green Claims Directive aim to prevent greenwashing. Legislation such as the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CS3D) and the New York Fashion Act (NYFA) requires companies to be accountable for transparency throughout their supply chains. Ever felt the urgent thrill of scoring the last piece of a limited-edition collection? That's how urgent sustainability in fashion has become—except the stakes are way higher.   Reading up on the Global Fashion Summit 2023, I couldn't help but think: If #sustainability were a fashion trend, would it be a flash in the pan or a timeless classic?   The buzz from Copenhagen tells me the industry wants it to be the latter—but wishing doesn't make it so.   The summit saw more than a thousand participants, from big-name fashion brands to policymakers, gathered to tackle some of the industry's most pressing issues. Federica Marchionni, the CEO, didn't sugarcoat the facts: the clock is ticking, and we must act now to forge a sustainable path.   Here's the gist for those who aren't deep in the fashion weeds. New laws are in the pipeline to hold companies accountable for their sustainability (or lack thereof).   This is huge because, let's face it, good intentions aren't enough to clean up the supply chains or combat #climatechange.   So what's my takeaway? Regulation is a game-changer that's coming, whether we're ready or not. But why wait? If we're serious about making sustainability the industry's "little black dress" (read: timeless essential), we have to move from hashtags to concrete actions.   So what are my thoughts as I read all of this? Regulation is no longer just a buzzword—it's about to be the rule of the land. But while rules and laws are vital, let's not forget that real change starts within each of us.   This is a moment where the fashion world decides what it wants to be when it 'grows up.' Are we content with sustainability being a fleeting trend, or are we committed to making it a cornerstone of our industry?   Unlike a fashion season that comes and goes, we have only one planet and one chance to get this right. #fashion #sustainablefashion #synergy
