Good to be quoted on #Euractiv today about the upcoming initiatives of the Commission to boost #AI #startups and innovation. "Computing infrastructure is a prohibitively expensive component of AI and this creates high barriers for startups to enter the market. That's why the Commission's proposal is so important: by providing computing as a public good it allows more #SMEs to build their own models rather than rely on Big Tech products. Going forward, the global AI race requires ever larger investments. Compared with the reported 16.5 billion € global investment only in the first quarter 2023, the Commission budget is little. It can only work if it leverages investments from the private sector. That is why it is essential that the Commission work closely with European AI companies, large and small, to draw a mid to long-term strategy for AI leadership. Europe's AI Revolution? Unleashing startup potential with supercomputer access I have posted several articles over the last three weeks about how Canada is falling behind in the AI era. This article highlights what other countries are doing to embrace and foster AI. In a significant move to bolster AI innovation, Europe has launched a one-stop shop, termed 'AI Factories', dedicated to empowering startups with access to specialized AI supercomputers. This initiative, as reported by Foo Yun Chee, is aimed at facilitating the development of general-purpose AI models. Following the recent EU landmark rules for large AI models, the European Commission's proposal marks a strategic push to enhance AI capabilities among startups and researchers. Thierry Breton, the EU industry chief, emphasized the integration of computing power, data, algorithms, and talent in this initiative. This move positions Europe in a competitive stance against global giants like the United States and China, focusing on a technology that spans numerous industries and applications. One for my network in the Nordics and Benelux 💡 I was curious to learn that the European Commission will be launching new initiatives to support and encourage AI innovation across nations and create its own AI ecosystem. Targeted at smaller businesses and startups, these include everything from education and reskilling programmes to financial support. It’s no secret that startups are hungry for growth - and that a variety of perspectives are needed to further the AI revolution. In the field of artificial intelligence, it's imperative to have an environment that supports responsible and ethical development to boost Europe's competitiveness. With the adoption of the AI Act, the European Union has taken a significant step in this direction. This report, initiated by the appliedAI Institute for Europe in cooperation with the European Commission, explores the status of the generative AI landscape in the EU and provides a great snapshot of the sector. Currently, there are around 6300 AI startups in the EU, with approximately 10.6% specializing in generative AI. These startups are spread across the continent, with the highest concentrations in Germany (19.9%), France (17.5%), Netherlands (10.9%), and Sweden (8.2%). The report identifies several key challenges for these startups: • building trustworthiness around generative AI • attracting venture capital to European generative AI startups • incorporating generative AI in public procurement • limited access to high-performance computing • need to enhance data accessibility and data sharing   Europe’s commitment to ethical AI governance not only fosters trust but also sets a global standard for responsible AI deployment. The EU AI Act aims to provide a regulatory framework to responsibly employ artificial intelligence, making it crucial for accelerating innovation and positioning Europe as a leader in this field. I ❤️ love that the EU is supporting #startups with their #AI needs. We need more of these structural interventions in the US and elsewhere! They published this document on boosting startups and innovation in trustworthy AI and here are 6 key steps they're taking: 1- Upgrade the EuroHPC17 #supercomputers to AI capabilities and facilitate access for startups and the science and innovation community in need of training AI models 2- Increase the availability of and facilitate access to high-quality #data for AI startups and the science and innovation community 3- Support algorithmic developments that are trustworthy, in line with the AI Act, including by making available R&I supporting #funds 4- Strengthen the EU’s generative AI talent pool, by developing and federating both AI-specific and sector-specific skills, and by attracting and retaining #talent 5- Promote the widespread uptake and use of #generativeAI in application areas, including by public administrations that could act as lead user of such applications 6- Encourage public and private #investments in AI startups and scaleups, including through venture capital or equity support Way to go! 🙌
