I recently wrote for National Review about the California minimum wage debate. The heart of this debate is about upward mobility. We should be asking which interventions are actually most effective at helping the working poor achieve true, sustained upward mobility, and arguing for those solutions. https://lnkd.in/gU47Assz

I recently discussed #WaCares and Initiative-2124 on Seattle Channel. A "Yes" vote for I-2124 allows workers and working families to opt out of the regressive payroll tax that provides very limited, if any, benefit for long-term care needs. Voting "Yes" gives workers the choice to decide their long-term care options based on their family situation. Almost 500,000 Washington workers opted-out, but the option is no longer available without the Initiative. Over 400,000 Washingtonians signed I-2124 so they too can opt-out.

Union strong! Working for AFSCME in a post-Janus world and a state with no formal labor relations structures or protections, plus a statute making public sector worker strikes a criminal offense to boot, was the pinnacle of playing with a the deck stacked in the dealer’s favor. However, as the post below makes clear, on-paper power discrepancies are not insurmountable when you have members, leaders, and organizers who are steadfast in their solidarity and capable in their actions. When the terms of the game are unfair, remember that you don’t have play their game on their terms. Organize and act together to create the fair and equitable work environment you and your co-workers deserve. And if you need help getting started, ask any local union for tips!
The U.S. Supreme Court’s Janus v. AFSCME Council 31 ruling was supposed to decimate public sector unions. But they continue to survive and even grow five years after that decision. The reason may be that AFSCME and other unions prepared for the ruling and stepped up internal organizing, AFSCME’s associate general counsel writes in an article.
