I agree that the tech industry alone is not the solution to the fundamental lack of opportunities for most African citizens to participate in the global economy. Inviting international oil companies to set up offshore drills and pay hefty commissions on every barrel extracted is an easier way for governments to make money than undertaking the hard work of educating people, building infrastructure, and overhauling policies to enable local businesses to compete globally with tradable goods and services. However, technology can serve as an enabler for developing a globally competitive economy and an inclusive society. East Africa's economic growth over the past decade would have been billions of dollars lower without the direct and indirect benefits of mobile money. As a result, millions of individuals gained their first foothold on the economic ladder, where they otherwise might have remained at the bottom. Similarly, social media has catalyzed the largest protests in Kenya since the establishment of democracy, mobilizing new generations of citizens based on policy rather than tribe or ethnicity. These technology tools are invaluable, but they are still just tools. Achieving inclusive growth and prosperity for all requires hard work from those in power to grow the economic pie, rather than simply consuming what is already on the table. https://lnkd.in/d3WR_kvS

Also, AI's about to add a massive leap forward for opening opportunities to informal labor throughout the global South, and the author doesn't even touch on it. For example: finding jobs for low wage and informally trained labor (or, as this author calls it, "cheap human material") proves difficult when few accessible platforms exist for companies to source these candidates. It's even harder with low-educated individuals feeling uncomfortable using text-primary platforms, having limited access to the internet, and not knowing how to form a career around their skillset. AI helps solve a lot of this. Speech-to-text over WhatsApp, resume generation over SMS and interactive coaching through LLM-powered phone calls are a few ways. And, it lets millions *more* gain their first foothold on the economic ladder, where they otherwise might have remained at the bottom. Not to mention the potential for new credit systems and career-building tools for these individuals. The amount of doors AI's about to open is akin to what apps initially provided (e.g. WhatsApp). It's sad to see German reporters write articles about a continent they don't live on, especially when they lack the lens through which to see tech's upside in an emerging market.

Good read. Africa needs to start with agriculture (especially in rural areas) for it being a primary industry it creates a base for all other industries. If technology was focused more on this industry then the less privileged in Africa can participate in the global economy.

I totally agree Young entrepreneurs should also focus on manufacturing and trading activities not to depend on other countries

You’re right. However, political will and transparency is one important factor that can bring about economic growth in Africa.

A relevant read. No country has developed by skipping manufacturing. Kudos Dr. Peter Schadt on putting pen to paper.
