As we at East Carolina University prepare for our latest civil discourse program Cupola Conversations, Israel - Palestine: Building Bridges, I want to take a moment to celebrate our students. Student leaders in ECU Hillel and the Muslim Student Association have advocated for their communities and acknowledged the civilian deaths on both sides of the conflict. What most impresses me, as well as gives me hope, is these leaders immediate interest in meeting and talking to one another. These efforts, that I have helped facilitate, has led to our campus conversation this Wednesday. Colleges and Universities continue to be criticized for their actions or inactions around local and national issues and incidents but I want suggest that perhaps we are looking in the wrong places. As the campus Deputy Free Speech Officer, as well as a nine year champion of creating civil discourse programming and spaces, I believe we should all be looking at how institutions, such as East Carolina, are working to promote civil discourse among those we are charged with educating - students. I am so proud of the many faculty and staff within the academy that model and educate institutional values as well as promote and articulate the concepts of civil discourse. Over my almost 30 years in higher education there is one absolute - students consistently amaze me. Their ability to move forward, imagine the future, and do great things, many times despite their surroundings, is the real story! On Nov. 1st, East Carolina University students, faculty, staff, and community will come together led by the efforts of both ECU Hillel and the Muslim Student Association. They will not debate or argue but instead will participate in a conversation that explores the emotional toll, the differences, and the struggle that our students experience in relation to this conflict. It will be a difficult but needed discussion that will illustrate the importance and the power of civil discourse.

Proven Executive Strategist, Gifted Communicator, Government Relations Advocate, Innovative University Administrator, Professor of Higher Education
Great News: Federal funding may help America get its first R1. Some may underestimate the value of an R1 HBCU, but I don't. There are two specific reasons I strongly advocate we need several designated R1s. First, because R1 universities are a leading source of new ideas, accepted theories and best practices, as well as thought leaders. We need culturally relevant engagement of issues and ideas and a R1 HBCU could definitely advance that. Second, R1 universities are fiscally more stable and thus able to invest in innovative strategies that impact the communities around them - an important opportunity for economically disadvantaged communities. #tillmanempowerment #HBCUadvocate https://lnkd.in/gbQvVXjb

The U.S. Department of Education (Department) announced today the launch of two grant programs to expand research infrastructure in our nation’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), Tribally Controlled Colleges and Universities (TCCUs), and Minority-Serving Institutions (MSIs), and to increase completion and retention rates among underserved students. The grants, which will provide nearly $100 million for transformational infrastructure investments and evidence-based strategies for improved student outcomes for underserved students, follow more than $25 billion in funding to HBCUs, MSIs, and TCCUs through the Department since President Biden took office. European #highered institutions work with their local #communities in many different ways, whether through engaged research, outreach to those who would otherwise not aim for HE, working with local communities and civil society to address urgent local problems, or in many other ways. But there is little in terms of sharing of good practice or the development of shared policies. Sjur Bergan discusses in some detail a recent white paper emanating from the US which, he argues, is of interest well beyond that country. It was produced by the Netter Center for Community Partnerships at the University of Pennsylvania with support from the The Teagle Foundation. 💡How can we affirm and develop the public purpose of highered? 💡How can higher education institutions further #democracy and #inclusion by working with their local communities? #highered #universities #communityoutreach #servicelearning #townandgown #communityengagement #EHEA University of Pennsylvania Ira Harkavy Rita A. We celebrate Juneteenth today because enslaved in Galveston, Texas did not know for more than 2 years that they were free. More than 150 years later, African Americans are still in the fight for the right to access knowledge. As DEI bans take affect all over the country, access to education for African Americans is also threatened. Ironically (or maybe not) in Texas, the home of Juneteenth, 131 scholarships directed to diverse candidates were put on hold or canceled all together. Scholarships that make education possible for African Americans are quickly vanishing at the same time we acknowledge that the lack of knowledge kept the enslaved from being free. So today in support of Juneteenth, do something to ensure that your organization, company or business is active in keeping DEI measures in place. This is the act of allyship. Not wearing a Juneteenth celebration T-shirt.

A little over a year ago I was able to participate in what would be the very last The University of Texas at Austin sanctioned Latinx graduation. I never knew a graduation ceremony held in a gymnasium would make me feel thankful and lucky, to be part of the 8% of Latinas to hold a graduate degree. Texas Senate Bill 17 eroded so many amazing opportunities, organizations and over 60 staff member and or professors who were laid off by overcompliance of SB 17. The dismantling of cultural graduation ceremonies and the multicultural engagement center at public universities in Texas have created a resilience in Texas students that SB 17 cannot break. In less than six months students and organizer were able to find funds in order to continue the survival of the Latinx graduation in spite of the The University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Julissa Muñiz, PhD: keynote speech shined a light for why cultural graduations are essential. “The reality of some getting to a place like UT can sometimes be jarring and overwhelming especially after almost two years of social isolation. Institutions sometimes have a way of making us feel like we don’t belong especially when you look around there aren’t many people who look like you, sound like you, or have experienced the things like you have. Still I want to remind you that you have always belonged and it’s on institutions to change not you. The reality is that you every single one of you is carving out a wider and more equitable path for those behind you not just in your family but for the nearly 3.6 million Latinx kids under the age of 18 growing up in Texas who may one day want to follow in your footsteps.
