How wonderful to see a full on freedom fighter and leader (and former Planned Parenthood colleague) recognized! Way to go Kelley Robinson!
This recognition is humbling beyond words. Being included in @TIME’s annual list of the 100 most influential people in the world is something I never dreamed of growing up Black and queer on the Southside of Chicago. At a young age, I saw firsthand the devastating impact of discrimination and bigotry against our LGBTQ+ community. This honor reminds me of the countless brave ancestors who fought tooth and nail to pave the way for progress. As president of the @HumanRightsCampaign, I carry the stories and struggles of social justice warriors who came before me — their courage in the face of adversity and their refusal to be silenced by hatred. We've come a long way, but the fight is far from over. The challenges before us are immense, and the battle for full LGBTQ+ freedom and liberation rages on. At HRC, we feel the weight of this responsibility every single day, knowing that lives hang in the balance and that futures are at stake. This recognition is bigger than just me. It's about the power of community. It's about resilience. It's about our community’s undying belief that we can build a brighter, more inclusive tomorrow for everyone. hrc.im/2024time100

There's been a lot of talk about "zombie laws" lately. While it may seem unfathomable that anti-abortion zealots could successfully dredge up century-old laws as a means of restricting modern repro rights, that is exactly what is happening. The 150-year-old Comstock Act came up in recent arguments about mifepristone before the Supreme Court and, just this week, the Arizona Supreme Court ruled that a 160-year-old near-total abortion ban still on the books could be enforced. These archaic laws have the potential to do much more than further dismantle the right to abortion, however. I hope you'll read my post about how the enforcement of zombie laws could result in the gutting of privacy, basic healthcare access and personal freedom all while forcing companies like UPS and FedEx to become our moral gatekeepers in ways that can shake up our very economy. https://lnkd.in/gfyzbxJn

Thanks for saying all of this "out loud," Erin Gallagher! I can't wait to talk to the Hype woman herself about the last few weeks of attacks on abortion, and all we HAVE to do to fight back. Stay tuned for the episode's air date.

As we close out Women’s History Month, I have a special message for all the companies saying you care about women while staying silent about the stripping of our rights. We’re watching you. We’re talking about you. We’re plotting out exits. The days of hiding behind the “that’s political” argument are gone. Women’s rights to be treated as full human is not political. Women’s rights to bodily autonomy is not political. Women’s rights to healthcare is not political. Any argument against these facts is misogyny masquerading as morality. So, when your comms folks and your PR peeps and your crisis comms strategy and your leadership team and your CEO tell you to stay away from speaking out — and up — about … … women’s rights … women’s healthcare … parental leave … abortion … IVF … miscarriages … LGBTQAI+ support … gender affirming care … I want *this* message delivered to their inboxes: There is a growing global collective of women telling each other to stay away from YOU. As … … 51% of the population … half of the labor force … 85% of consumer buying power … our business is *your* business. Feel free to slip these stats into your next all-hands where your company praises itself as a place that is safe for women: … 76% of women choose their job based on the company’s policies … 60% of women will leave a job who’s policies don’t align with them … The US economy loses 170 BILLION dollars every year on women and people with uteruses who wanted an abortion and can’t access one. Happy Women’s History Month. “Abortion Access is Every Business’ Business.” 👆 👆 👆Hell yeah it is! I’m joining the chorus of support for the Don’t Ban Equality billboard unveiled today in NYC! It’s a super cool, super important campaign highlighting companies that are proactive about how seriously they take abortion rights. It’s also a great springboard for two issues on my mind: 1. We need more folks and more businesses to take a PUBLIC stance on abortion rights! #DontBanEquality is a great way to show that support, so please encourage your employers and colleagues to act today on social media and—importantly—to remain steadfast and ready to be outspoken supporters of abortion rights in the long-term. Head to dontbanequality.com and ask your company to join this impressive list of companies and community. 2. All companies need to take an honest look at their policies around reproductive and maternal health—and be willing to adapt them! One easy way they can do that is to utilize our just-launched Reproductive and Maternal Health (RMH) Compass on rmhcompass.org. This awesome tool makes it easy for your HR department to take a survey and see where your company stands on repro and maternal health benefits. Then, they'll be provided with benchmarking reports and resources to help the company improve. Every employee deserves access to the RMH benefits they need—this tool will help your employer ensure they do! I hope these issues go straight from my mind to your to-do list! Please share about Don’t Ban Equality TODAY. And please encourage your company’s Human Resources department to take the RMH survey to see where it stands on reproductive and maternal health benefits. Abortion access really is every business’ business. YOU may just be the key to ensuring your company is doing its part.
