I grew up playing basketball with aspirations of one day playing professionally overseas, and who knows, maybe even stepping onto an NBA court if the stars aligned. The stars not only failed to align, they all went supernova. Unfortunately, on the very same day I was selected as a walk-on at Point Loma Nazarene after years of hard work, I tore my MCL and never got the chance to step onto a college basketball court. The lesson I learned that day was this: Never tie your identity to something that can vanish in an instant [like your job], or you'll be lost when it's over. Everything has an expiration date. Following college, I secured a job and devoted three years to an intense weightlifting routine, admittedly ignoring cardio. I mention this to highlight that there have been times in my life when my fitness took precedence. However, I'm now seven years removed from any consistent workout routine. I eat as if I'm gearing up to challenge Michael Phelps in the pool, yet my only physical activity involves the short "walk" from my desk to the couch. After reading "Atomic Habits" (I stopped at page 40 in 2023), I came to realize that, for the sake of my long-term health, I needed to fully embrace Law #3 in the realm of habit-building, which is to "make it easy." As a result, I acquired a power rack (pictured), and I now wholeheartedly believe that my garage/office/man cave is truly complete. Following my first home workout yesterday, a sudden thought crossed my mind: "I want to live long enough to play with my great-grandchildren.” Cheers to adopting new habits and bidding farewell to the old ones! In May, I left teaching after seven years to pursue other career possibilities. Today I applied to job number 100. Your Strengths and Job Hunting It has been just over 2 weeks since I was #laidoff from a job I loved with a brand that filed for bankruptcy. (I shared in previous posts why and how I’m staying optimistic during these turbulent times.) Finding myself in the messy middle and #opentowork has been eye opening in so many ways. Strangely, I’m more tuned into my strengths than I probably have been ever before. In challenging times, it’s easy to doubt and question ourselves. However, focusing on my strengths is giving me energy, and I’m using my strengths as a lens through which to view career opportunities. Looking for an optimistic self-starter who likes people and making things happen? Great! I can’t wait to use my strengths of #achiever #futuristic #activator #positivity #woo to make a positive impact! If you’ve not taken #strengthsfinder, or it has been so long that you don’t remember what your top 5 were, I recommend taking the test. Post your strengths in eyesight to burn them into your brain to remind you of some of the ways you’re uniquely you. Discuss them with your spouse or maybe your kids to get their perspective. If you’re part of a team, it can be a good #teambuilding exercise to take the test and discuss your results. Talk about what you admire about one another and how your results might be impacting the way you work together. It can be a great way to find commonalities if working #remote. I’m including a photo from an incentive trip, which was part of a brand activation. I loved building a positive community where friendships began and creators stretched their storytelling skills. Question for all of my connections that are currently #opentowork. You are "full-time job" is job hunting, learning and certifications... it gets HARD and discouraging. What are you doing to fill your cup? How are you practicing self-care so you can continue to be present for your "job" but more importantly your friends and family? This is my second time through a lay off and last time I admittedly did NOT manage it well. Grateful that Lee Stevens dropped into my life - he may not realize it but he saved my sanity. This time around I am trying to be more mindful of keeping a schedule - you can't look for work 8 hours a day. I am trying to find the right balance of job hunting, learning and also do things that fill my cup. Hike with my tribe, kayak with my sister, volunteer at a local rescue, get outside and MOVE. So all of you #opentowork what is your advice? How do you fill your cup? How are you finding balance? Share your tips - there are a lot of us out there trying to manage this process.
