Pringle Hall is named in honor of Admiral Joel Pringle, USN (1873-1932). He was a member of the U.S. Naval War College graduating Class of 1920; served as a member of the staff, 1923-1925; and served as College President, 1927-1930. It was during his presidency that the building program for Pringle Hall was approved. Pringle Hall opened in 1934 to house the College's auditorium and to serve as the war gaming maneuver room. War gaming continued there until 1957 when the first computer-generated gaming facility was established in Sims Hall. The war gaming that was done in the late 1930s for War Plan Orange in preparation for WWII was done in Pringle Hall. Today, in support of the USNWC's academic mission, the Wargaming Department conducts high-quality applied gaming, research, analysis, and education in both McCarty Little and Sims Halls. Simulating these complex war scenarios builds analytical, decision-making, and risk assessment skills. I found an interesting document online which describes, in exhaustive detail, the ORBAT for the British Army of the Rhine (BAOR) of the late 80's. A fascinating read for a couple of reasons; one, the size, capacity and capability of the British Army (regular and Territorial) of 35 years ago stands in very stark contrast to the miniscule army of today; two, the extremely detailed listings of the Territorial units, right down to the role and location of the various sub-units i.e., *'2nd Bn, The Yorkshire Volunteers (Yorkshire & Humberside) Locations: Type: TA INF BN (NATO MILAN)  Bn HQ & HQ Coy - Worsley Bks, York (w/MILAN Pl) Mortar & Recce Pls @ Norwood Far Grove, Beverley  A (The Prince of Wales’s Own Regiment of Yorkshire) Coy – TAC Colliergate, York w/det @ Armoury Rd, Selby' * etc., etc., ....which speaks to a period of time where, thanks to its size, role, and availability of the defence estate nationwide, was an integral part of British society at every level, transcending most normal boundaries. TA Drill Halls were ubiquitous and the regiments and corps proudly housed therein connected the soldiers to their hometowns. The Regimental system is successful, in part, because of such deliberate 'tribalism'. As Regimental identities continue to be dissolved due to disbandments and mergers, the tribalism, aka 'unit cohesion', cannot help but be weakened, if ever so slightly. On this day, we are reminded to “never forget.” But as time passes, many of their names and stories can be lost to history if we don’t work to keep them in our collective memory. So how do we “never forget”? How do we remember the willingness of these gallant souls to do what others would not? How do we truly honor them, not on a single day, but every day? The answer is to stand for America’s founding values. To strengthen our communities. To give back whenever we can. To make this the best nation on earth, not by what we say, but by what we do. This is a promise to the fallen—a vow to live our lives to the fullest and for each other. W O M E N - I N - M I L I T A R Y Women in the military have always sparked debate. Over the years, their roles have evolved significantly. From the first female nurses in the Royal Navy during the 1880s to women flying RAF combat aircraft in the 1990s, progress has been steady. Today, women can even serve in close combat units. This change brings the UK more in line with its allies and represents a big step forward. Here are some examples of the incredible roles women hold today: a female RAF weapons technician, fine equestrians from the British Army's King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery, and both flight deck and embarked personnel from the Royal Navy. It's never too late to revisit old lessons! As a Navy veteran, I recently picked up a book that I read years ago during my Naval service. The experience has been enlightening, and I've found that some of those old tricks are just as useful today.
