Newport Medieval Ship Crowdfund Appeal, Please Support. This ship was unearthed in 2002, discovered in Newport, South Wales. According to tests carried out on the oak timbers it is believed that the trees were felled in the winter of 1457-58, from somewhere in the forests of the Basque Country in northern Spain and that it was built somewhere along this coastline, setting sail shortly after this date. In this period of history when regulations didn't exist, things were built at fast speed. It means that this ship pre dates both the Mary Rose built in 1510-11 and the Swedish ship the Vasa built 1626-28. The ship would have been over 30 meters in length, capable of carrying 200 tonnes and bearing three masts, so a formidable site. Today only the hull remains. It is known that the ship was brought into Newport, South Wales for repairs some ten years after setting sail in 1468 or 1469. When an accident involving the cradle that it was placed in during these repairs collapsed, damaging the ship, which meant that it was never to set sail again. The timbers that were unearthed have been cleaned and conserved. With all details of their discovery and the timbers details and other artifacts found at the time fully recorded. The crowdfund is to now raise the much needed funds to bring this ship back to life. To rebuild the hull and then display this along with the other artifacts, for people to be able to see. It will be housed with a display that will explain the history that is known and also the story of it's discovery. There is now only 27 days left to support this great and worth while project. I have included a link here plus there is one in the post by Dr Jamie Davies who I thank for bringing this appeal to everyone's attention. https://lnkd.in/ek9s9CCz The best way to learn about any history is with a visual display, which then allows young and old alike to enjoy and learn together. #NewportMedievalShip #Ships #History #Medieval #Newport #SouthWales #Wales #BasqueCountry #Spain #MaryRose #Vasa #Crowdfunding #Appeal #AGRHistory
