From the time of not being able to afford a Microsoft Windows or Office subscription to the day of joining Microsoft as a #FinanceManager, I grew up! I was may be 8 or 9 years old when I first saw windows in my father’s office and I has absolutely no of what this Windows logo is, or what Microsoft company is. As I grew old and understood more about it, I learned about the company’s culture and respect for its employees and customers. And I thought, “here’s a company that I can call a #DreamCompany.” And it feels amazing when the dream becomes a reality. I mean, what better company to join whose products are used by every Government, Organization, and People in the world. I started my job search in December’23 when my dear friend Nikhil Girraj Khandelwal told me to apply for open roles and Microsoft. It took me 6 months with 2 interview loops at Microsoft and about 40 other interviews including Meta AMD Credit Karma Flexport Copart and others to land my role at Microsoft. There were a lot of difficult decisions to make like leaving Dallas and moving to Redmond and leaving some amazing offers for other reasons. But as it is said, “All good things takes time and sacrifices!” And so, it did. I want to appreciate Saritha Venkata and Candi Capperauld for the interview process and support throughout. And of course Kelvin Bailey(MBA) whom I reached out on LinkedIn and the guy went overboard and helped me out with understanding the interview process, culture, role, and people at Microsoft. And of course, there have been people as a constant support system in the difficult job search and stressful mental health situation - Aarti P. Melody Sheridan Rachel Matthias Nick Velikov - MBA, MSF, CFM My wife Akhila Bekkary for tolerating my drama and for her love and support at every step. My sister Kanika Goyal who knows exactly what to say, Ranjith Pothagani Monica Junnuthula for the constant family support and referrals, Nirmit Shah I can’t mention here what I’m thankful for 😅, Rutvik Raol Dheeraj Singh Kshatri Thakur Balasubramaniam Chandrasekaran for letting me rant and vent uncontrollably. Thanks for all the love and support! I can go on and on about how each one of you got my back to get me here. I also became a #CareerDevelopmentCoach over the last few months and I think I get it from all the support system that I have to guide and support people in their career. The TOUGH part of working a 9-5 w/ big Tech: Will AI steal your job? 👇🏾 It’s been 16 days into 2024, And people are already losing their means of livelihood Universal Music Group announce 100’s of job cuts Citigroup Global Capital Markets Inc. announced mass layoffs of 20,000 people NBC News announced a few job cuts (50-100 jobs) Disney has announced to cut 20% of its employees Discord announced to cut 17% of its employees. One of my favourite PM influencers was affected Chloe Shih Google announced a second mass layoff affecting hundreds to thousands of role due to their reliance on AI Amazon announced mass huge layoff from Prime videos, audible, MGM studios teams BlackRock announced mass layoffs from its teams What could be happening? Is it AI? Is it the economy? Is it just in the US? Is it just the trend? I don’t know.. But these are strategies I’m implementing to stay prepared: - Be deliberate about the impact you make in your org - Be deliberate about your personal brand - Cultivate projects outside your 9-5 - Be deliberate about your network - Be consistent with your savings - Seek mentorship Some of our favourite PMs in the space unfortunately found themselves out of a job in the past year. I recently applied for a non-technical role, specifically a program manager position, at Microsoft. I'd like to share my experience and gather some insights from you. As an outsider without any referrals, I submitted my application through Microsoft's career site approximately a month ago. Although I am based in Asia Pacific, the role requires on-site work at their HQ in Washington state, USA. Great news! I received an email from an internal recruiter a week ago, expressing their interest in advancing me further in the process. They kindly requested I answer four 'screening questions' by replying to their email. I promptly responded, confirming my willingness to relocate to the US and expressing my strong interest in the role. However, it has been over a week since I sent my responses, and I haven't received an update on whether I made it to the next round. I'm eager to know the outcome, regardless of the result. Do you think I'm still being considered? Are you familiar with Microsoft's recruitment process for non-technical roles? I'm curious to know the average timeline recruiters follow during the selection process. Should I continue to wait patiently for a few more weeks, or would it be wise to reach out for an update? This opportunity means a lot to me and aligns perfectly with my passion and experience, making it a dream come true to work for Microsoft.
