Whether 4D imaging radar and camera fusion methods will become the primary trend of autonomous sensor systems is the point to watch.
⚙️ The Evolution of Sensor Fusion: Modern sensor fusion primarily focuses on high-level fusion, where each sensor's optimal outputs are processed and merged. But the future lies in low-level fusion, wherein raw data from both sensors are combined early in the processing chain. This integration is challenging due to the intrinsic differences in the data from cameras and radars. LiDAR, another key player in autonomous driving, offers precision but doesn't always perform optimally in adverse weather. This limitation brings imaging radar into the limelight. Modern imaging radars approach LiDAR-like accuracy by providing 4D point cloud data and compensate for some of the camera's vulnerabilities. As technology propels forward, imaging radars will produce denser data, further enhancing real-time environmental perception. While individual sensors bring distinct advantages to the table, the fusion of imaging radar and camera sensors paves the way for a comprehensive, resilient, and advanced perception system, pushing the boundaries of what autonomous driving can achieve. https://lnkd.in/ga5ywCXt #ImagingRadar #SensorFusion #Camera #LiDAR

Aperture-centric radar or channel-centric? Which unlocks the most performance? ( Part 2/5 ) In aperture-centric radar design we're thinking about how to use virtual channels to expand the size of our sensing surface. Multiple synchronized radar sensors are spaced strategically on a vehicle and signal is fused to produce a much larger coherent antenna. Channel-centric designs, like Massive MIMO radars use virtual channels to "fill in the space" so to speak. Within a given size constraint of the sensor, they maximize sensitivity and improve resolution. The aperture of these sensors, however, is limited by the size of the #hardware. Zendar's Distributed Aperture Radar (DAR) design provides radar resolution that is comparable to #lidar using inexpensive medium-range radar sensors. In the next part (3/5) we'll talk about #automotive applications for improved radar performance and the business value for #oems . #ADAS #autonomousvehicles #autonomousdriving #selfdriving #sensortechnology #vehiclesafety #drivesafe
