We all know and love the fact that wines made from the same grape can be vastly different, depending on where the grapes are grown – even if it is only a few hectares away. Jamie Avenell, Wine Trading Director here at Bibendum, shows us the how these two wines from different plots, made with similar winemaking techniques, present completely differently when in the glass. Conte Vistarino are revered winemakers from Oltrepo Pavese, Italy, made famous by becoming the first winegrower in the region to plant French cuttings of Pinot Noir, locally referred to as Pinot Nero. In Vintage & Variations, we uncover how two of these wines compare across different terroirs. Despite the similar winemaking techniques, they present as completely different profiles, as the Tavernetto boasts expressive aromatics which jump out of the glass, while the Pernice has a deeper brooding complexity which makes it destined to be a fantastic food wine. ALIGOTE – BURGUNDY'S OTHER WHITE GRAPE Aligoté gets no respect, chardonnay is extolled as giving a wine of elegance, finesse, complexity and length, and has been called the world’s finest white wine grape depending where it is grown and by the winemaker. Aligoté is often considered inferior due to its high acidity, less flavour, smoothness and length in the aftertaste. Despite its comparative lack of finesse, aligoté is fun, and today a generation of young winemakers is experimenting with it, with delicious results. It provides a lively, aromatic wine and is often very reasonably priced, in contrast to the more reserved, almost neutral aromas of chardonnay and its increasingly high price-tag. Other regions (Moldova, Bulgaria, and Romania) have started planting aligote with some success including Ontario. Chateau des Charmes has a few acres planted and makes decent wines at reasonable cost. Kir de Dijon, is a popular aperitif in France and in some countries. It was created in Dijon by adding a few drops of raspberry liqueur to a glass of chilled aligote to soften the acidity of the wine.

Can a Master of Wine have a favourite wine? When you have tasted thousands of wines, it is not just about where the wine comes from, it is also about what else it brings to the table. Every wine region has a rich history and time-tested winemaking traditions that it pours into a bottle along with the wine. So, my favourite wines are those that capture the perfection of a wine region and bring value to a wine lover’s money. Some of the best wines I have tasted come from lesser-known vineyards that do complete justice to the vineyards they represent and leave you wanting more. Besides, wine tastes the best when it is had with friends and loved ones, with great food and bonding. If a wine is etched in your mind as a fond memory, then it will be among your favourites and a Master of Wine is no exception. So, the next time you drink wine, don’t just focus on the reputation and prestige of a region. Get to know the vineyard, its story and what motivates it to pursue excellence. For wine lovers, it can be hard to resist the allure of Napa Valley or Bordeaux. The first rumblings that English wines should be taken seriously began in 2006 when a Nyetimber Classic Cuvee made in West Sussex was crowned the best sparkling wine at the International Wine Competition.
