Was the AT&T breach material, even if it was not financially material to their bottom line? Quick answer … it could be if it is qualitatively material. This question is not particular to cybersecurity incidents. The SEC has for decades stated that materiality can be qualitative and quantitative. But it brought to mind this lesson on the subject from 2011. Rupert Murdoch was testifying in front of Parliament because his property, News of the World, hacked victims of crimes to get stories. While the hacking was known to his board, Murdoch said he did not pay attention to it because News of the World represented less than 1% of his holdings. It was not quantitatively material. When you say this during your testimony to the government about harm your company caused others … it may be qualitatively material because of that harm. HALOCK released to the public DoCRA (The DoCRA Council ) and co-developed #CISRAM with Center for Internet Security when we saw that people were confusing the harm they may cause themselves with their duty to protect others from harm. We have a way to go before company leadership understands the distinction. But the tools are available to solve the problem. Let me know if you need help.

#thinkofit I was reading some related news& posts to democracy, election,… It made me ask what makes it succeed. Its the power of local people. What are the opposing challenges? There are many like system inadequecies, local domestic issues,…. Etc. but really the threat to a living democracy is from land occupation (land grab), fake news on social media, fake stolen accounts(cyber wars) and authoritarian dictatorships that like their ideological feudalism to replace a democratic system where people have a voice to speak, challenge, debate, create new possibility or live older traditions(diversity of thought& practices) with healthy participation.

Our Australian security associations are in need of our support! Though there are a few relatively large security business associations, we miss an opportunity in our industry associations where individuals in the industry can have legitimate input, ownership and voting rights. Why is this important? Well, when our industry associations only truly represent a couple of thousand providers at best, out of the 180,000ish security professionals in the market, their ability to instil change and improvement is weak. We need numbers. Though everyone I meet in the industry seems to say the same thing, "What are these associations doing for me?" we sometimes miss the things they do in the background and miss opportunities to support them. The greatest threat to Australia's security industry, in my opinion, is that there is a level of apathy that is not being addressed; some think it is something we can never overcome. Those who think this and say this out loud fail to recognise that this very apathy has engulfed and owns them. We need true security professionals to step up and help us overcome this, and I am working with an association that is showing positive signs that they are willing to allow change and are keen to address this industry-wide issue. I invite anyone who feels they are a security professional, from the guards and the K9 handlers to the business owners, consultants and end-user teams, to stand up and support a movement to reduce apathy and provide support to the other associations that have not the ability to get the numbers needed to really drive change. On the 6th of March in Victoria, the AISP meet, and I encourage the security professionals of our industry to come to this meeting, join this association and help drive a positive change in our industry, where you, the individual, have just as much say in the direction of our industry as the big companies do!
