As we witness the final death throes of this horrific human tragedy, with all of its cost in children, the innocent and our humanity, we must find a path forward. We are now all obligated to those who have paid the ultimate price and those that must now live in the aftermath of our collective failure. Many will fail to see the lessons that this affront to our humanity is showing us all. However enough do, and we are many from all parts of the world. We understand our values, we see your horror, we see your crimes, but most of all we see you. To understand the true horror of this madness against humanity, you must first believe that all are equally valuable and all are valid. Therefore this is our worst on full display. An unjust environment exploding into horror of the worse kind, unstoppable despite our voices. However all things end, and how this ends is vital for our future. Expanding horror is not the aim, stopping it once and for all is the aim, nothing less will do for those who have paid and will pay for this madness. "KEYS TO WARFARE—We live in an era in which people are seldom directly hostile. The rules of engagement—social, political, military—have changed, and so must your notion of the enemy. An up-front enemy is rare now and is actually a blessing. People hardly ever attack you openly anymore, showing their intentions, their desire to destroy you; instead they are political and indirect. Although the world is more competitive than ever, outward aggression is discouraged, so people have learned to go underground, to attack unpredictably and craftily. Many use friendship as a way to mask aggressive desires: they come close to you to do more harm. (A friend knows best how to hurt you.) Or, without actually being friends, they offer assistance and alliance: they may seem supportive, but in the end they're advancing their own interests at your expense. Then there are those who master moral warfare, playing the victim, making you feel guilty for something unspecified you've done. The battlefield is full of these warriors, slippery, evasive, and clever. Understand: the word "enemy"—from the Latin inimicus, "not a friend"—has been demonized and politicized. Your first task as a strategist is to widen your concept of the enemy, to include in that group those who are working against you, thwarting you, even in subtle ways. (Sometimes indifference and neglect are better weapons than aggression, because you can't see the hostility they hide.) Without getting paranoid, you need to realize that there are people who wish you ill and operate indirectly. Identify them and you'll suddenly have room to maneuver. You can stand back and wait and see or you can take action, whether aggressive or just evasive, to avoid the worst. You can even work to turn this enemy into a friend. But whatever you do, do not be the naive victim. Do not find yourself constantly retreating, reacting to your enemies' maneuvers. Today we will not see what we used to see. There is a perplexity that doesn’t come from the fronts. I know it’s an exaggeration, but I woke up in 1939. In a world declaredly divided. My astonishment is not reflected in other faces, it does not invade other people’s profiles. I walked in a trance until I found a friend and I was as shocked as the others and I detected how impassive they were. For them, the world remained untouched. I envied them. It’s like a scare without defined limits. Blurred by surprise. By selective silence. By the inertia of the world. For the useless incessant appeal for help. Today, day one of mortification, of a falling asleep that hit us with disproportionate shadows. Even though today is our darkest hour, I made efforts to pray for arks of salvation today. Today, they say, victims can be blamed because they were not victims enough. Today, we read that victims have not behaved appropriately for victims. Today we experience the inexorability of defense wars and avoidable suffering. And what is fair? Today we have lost the measure: leaders who do not lead and people who do not know their value. Today our sense of history has been corrupted because, unforgivably, our memory has collapsed. Today the only unanimity is to pray for the hostages, for children who do not know that they are participating in a story in which they did not act, and for innocent people who are losing what they never had. Today life has been raffled off in inaccurate rocket markets. We watch the misinformation, the calculated media, the adjustment to synchronized inaccuracy. Or did you not witness the double news? The half-words issued in suspicious notes? Today the word that defines massacres prefers to bypass the word “terror”. What are you afraid of anyway? To call the name by name? Or to change the name of what defines the unacceptable.

There has been a lot of criticism levelled at the armed security team (AST) seen in this video. Some of it may well be justified. The AST doesn’t seem to have an organised approach to what they are observing in the context of the environment in which they are operating. They don’t seem to be able to assess what threat the skiff represents and how to respond to it.   However, I use the word “seem” on purpose and cautiously here, because what we – sat in our offices ashore – are observing in the video is obviously open to interpretation. Clearly, lots of people have opinions on it, but it unless you were there how can you be so confident that: (a) You would have identified the threat correctly and in a timely manner? (b) You know how you would have reacted in the circumstances? (c) You know your decisions would have been better and resulted in a positive outcome? Some of the criticism seems to me to be a bit tenuous, fails to acknowledge it is expressed with the benefit of hindsight and is, perhaps, too arrogant in certain instances. In an effort to get some measure of professional reasonableness around this, I was wondering if anyone can offer an educated view on the following two questions: (1) Under what circumstances would it have been possible for an AST to disable the skiff at a safe range to the vessel? (2) What nature and calibre of weapons would have had to have been lawfully available to the AST to do so, assuming the engine was (a) an outboard engine or (b) an inboard engine? Or the hull was penetrable to the extent it would have been possible to hole it sufficiently to sink the skiff? Grateful for genuine feedback.
