🌍 Understanding Environmental Justice (EJ) is crucial for equitable policies, yet a recent study by Mendez-Barrientos et al. reveals significant gaps in addressing justice-based principles in the academic literature on the Columbia River Basin (CRB). 📚 In the article, the researchers stated that articles often focus on singular dimensions of justice, neglecting the integrated nature of EJ. Procedural justice, while essential, often overlooks power dynamics shaping decision-making processes. Restorative justice, including reparations for past harms, is frequently sidelined, hindering transformative efforts. 🤝 Neglecting recognitional justice further complicates procedural and distributive justice, impacting policy outcomes. The interrelationship of these dimensions underscores the need for a relational and integrative approach to EJ research and practice. 🔄 Injustices are reinforced across institutional, spatial, and temporal scales, perpetuating unjust trajectories. Recognizing these complex dynamics is vital for fostering accountability and addressing the root causes of injustice. 🔍 This study highlights the necessity of adopting comprehensive approaches to EJ, moving beyond singular dimensions and embracing the interconnectedness of justice principles. Dear Connections, I hope this post serves as food for thought. Here, I aim to draw your attention towards a specific contemporary legal area and also highlight why we, as legal professionals, must stay connected with developments in other subjects that intersect with law. I recently came to know about a theory related to a significant chapter of our past. Do you remember reading about the Indus Valley Civilization during your time at school? Isn't it baffling how a civilization as advanced as theirs, with remarkable art, ahead-of-its-time architecture and exceptionally well-planned cities crumbled and their identities were almost wiped out and forgotten for centuries? While many might be familiar with the invasion and migration theories that attempt to explain this, recent studies attribute the downfall of the greatest civilization of its time to one area they could not manage well: ENVIRONMENT. This theory indicates that overdevelopment led to catastrophic environmental effects and a harsh period of climate change. Does this ring an alarming bell? It certainly does for me, and likely for you as well, given our current environmental challenges. In my opinion, this is precisely why an increased discussion around ENVIRONMENTAL LAW AND STTRICTER EIA NORMS is necessary for our country. Despite our history of nature worship, many dismiss climate change movements happening in the West, even as we face record-breaking temperatures and unpredictable monsoon levels each year. It is high time we wholeheartedly embrace the idea of SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT as is regularly reiterated by the Hon'ble Supreme Court as well. Dr Calum TM Nicholson represented the Climate Policy Institute, delivering a talk at Durham University, at the invitation of the Centre for Sustainable Development Law and Policy (CSDLP). The topic of the lecture was so-called ‘climate migration’, the subject of Nicholson’s recent co-edited book, Climate Migration: critical perspectives for law, policy, and research (published by Hart: Bloomsbury). In this comments, Nicholson argued that ‘climate migration’ was a vague concept in search of a concrete constituency, and that in its perennial conceptual flaws, it points to deeper general epistemological pathologies in how technocratic cultures attempt to identify and address societal problems. It is not that we simple do not have the right answers, but that we often ask the wrong questions. #sustainability #climatepolicy
