+Leadership Thought 25+ Leaders, are you looking to try learning the piano, yet again, and play some Christmas songs? This is the season to play piano, with so many songs which can be played at the beginner level and more advanced. I have found all sorts of "how to" videos online. This video here really drew me in today as the instructor has such an angelic voice. I only watched three videos in the set from this channel: the first performance, first practice of a Christmas song, and first piano lesson, that's right, in reverse order. I'm sure that if you want to learn the piano and play Christmas songs, you can definitely do so successfully over the next month. From a leadership perspective, I like the approach presented here of having a stated goal, a process, resources, lots of positive feedback, and ongoing improvement. What else can you learn for leadership from these videos? Now back to my children's Christmas piano book that I pull out every year just after Thanksgiving. (I never had piano lessons growing up and got a piano after my first house. It now sits in the back room and gets played every year during the holidays. Principles for planning a Christmas event with limited resources At my church for the last few years I have volunteered to organise a "Christmas performance". It has meant either holding a little Nativity play (on story of Jesus' birth) along with musical performances. This year is no exception. I am acutely aware of the challenges and limitations. I am sure I can pull something together with whoever can help me and a good measure of ingenuity. It is a chance to pull together and put on a good fun show! Here are six principles I came up with to start with: (1) Acknowledge that there are resources (even if limited) (2) Note what people have in terms of willingness and ability to do for the performance. This includes both adults and children! (3) Embrace the challenge of producing an event using the resources (4) Start with intention to create an engaging experience for both audience and performers alike (5) Engage people for their ideas and solicit active involvement. What did the Red Hot Chili Peppers teach Questlove about operationalizing gratitude? Questlove (a.k.a. Amir Thompson) is probably one of the most successful drummers on the planet. As the bandleader on The Tonight Show and Hip-Hop's most in-demand session musician, he's an undeniable musical force. I caught a clip of him talking with Conan O'Brien when he said something amazing about touring with his band 'the Roots' and opening for the Red Hot Chili Peppers. "Every three to four songs, those guys would get into sort of a football huddle, and by the fourth time they did this, I'm thinking, why do they keep having these little meetings?" Quest asks Flea- "Dude, what are you guys talking about when you go into that huddle?" Flea says- "We're just so full of gratitude, we're four guys that met when we were 13, and we're just showing gratitude to each other, like we really made it." Gratitude is the opposite of entitled. It is something you can feel from others and it generally feels good. I'm not suggesting that it is necessary to huddle up so often to just be grateful. But...WHAT IF, we were more intentional when we huddle or meet to shine the light on what is going right, what we appreciate, who and why appreciate something that someone has done. As leaders we are the producers. We have the unique opportunity to set the tone. So who and what are you grateful for? My hope is that you don't have to spend too long figuring it out. Last night, my husband and I went to the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra to see a friend play with one of our favorite artists. And on the way to the show, my husband asked me: "Have I ever told you about Anthony's bassoon?" Um. Nope. What he proceeded to tell me blew my mind. Our friend, who is a world renowned bassoonist, plays on one of the most famous bassoons in the world. Like the actual instrument he plays on is famous. It's not an ordinary bassoon. Why? Because it has been handed down from world renowned artist to artist. All mentoring the next rising musician. This bassoon is not just an incredibly made instrument that dates back to 1934 nor the simple tool in which our friend makes his livelihood on. It's a symbol of the greats who have gone before and the knowledge imparted on the next generation. An actual passing of the baton. It makes me stop and think about those who have gone before me. What "bassoon" am I carrying with me in my field of work? Who has invested in me and what can I continue to carry for them? (Man, am I grateful for these folks). From here, I look at myself. Am I carrying these passed on skillsets/lessons with honor? If not, I need to readjust. And then, to take it one step further, I think of who I can come alongside. How can I continue this pattern of generously sharing tools, resources, or skills? Look up. Look down. Look out. I am curious, Linkedin. Who has given you your "bassoon"? People rarely succeed unless they have fun in what they’re doing. This is one of my all time favorite quotes by Dale Carnegie and I saw it in action this week. I was in New Orleans for a business retreat and we spent Tuesday afternoon listening to music on Bourbon Street. We stumbled across this tiny bar called Fritzels. There were maybe 5 people listening to this man, Richard Scott, play piano and sing. We stopped in and stayed for about 2 hours. He was unbelievable. Not only was he musically talented, he had fun! This was not a sold out Jazz club with hundreds of people, but he played like it was. You couldn’t help but be drawn to him. Sometimes we hold ourselves back from having fun and going all in because we think it’s not the right time. We give ourselves excuses as to why we can’t have fun yet or why we can’t fully commit to something. If you love what you’re doing, have fun with it, no matter the size of the audience. When you have fun, it will attract others to want to work with you and you’ll enjoy your time a lot more. #growthmindset #leadership #progressoverperfection

Day 12 of #Reggaemonth and the song that I selected is Bob Marley's "One Love". It is practically the national anthem of Jamaica although I hasten to say that we have a great national anthem! But it is synonymous with our country. It is aspirational .... "One love, one heart Let's get together and feel all right As it was in the beginning (One love) So shall it be in the end (One heart)" That is what we aim for in our organisations isn't it? We want people to be connected to each other emotionally and to work and move as one. Sadly, that is seldom the position even in the smallest of organisations. It shouldn't be surprising though because you can't just put people together and hope that things work out. You have to be deliberate about building a culture where people are connected by a shared vision. And, you have to reinforce that daily and even hourly. Oh and one more thing - you have to act when the heart is not beating as one. It is not fun to have to intervene but left unchecked you will end up with conflict, confusion and definitely everything will NOT be alright. #organizationalculture #managingculture #leadership #buildingculture #managingconflict

This week Jonathan Groff’s Tony award acceptance speech moved me in many ways, particularly on the career front. I assumed (incorrectly) that Groff already had a Tony award to his name given his past roles, performances, and accolades. And I did not realize that we were the same age. That struck me most as I look for inspiration from others who achieve success and/or influence outside of the “wonderkid” success trope. These stories are important for those of us with career paths that include set backs, missteps, and disappointment. We need to share more of these stories for well-rounded representation of career trajectories and timelines. Groff helped me to remember valuable lessons learned through my journey: ·        Grind. Commit to putting in good work each day no matter how far out the goal may seem. ·        Grit. Hustle, passion, and perseverance are necessary to reach long-term goals. ·        Support. Surround yourself with people who are there in the good times and the bad times. ·        Acknowledgement and Appreciation. Let those people know how much they mean to you and how their presence in your life influenced you along the way. ·        Authenticity. Follow your passions while being your true self.
