Did you know that approximately 50% of businesses and 32% of charities have encountered cyber security breaches or attacks in the past year? This percentage significantly increases for medium businesses (70%), large businesses (74%), and high-income charities earning £500,000 or more annually (66%). The Cyber Security Breaches Survey 2024 has been released by Gov UK makes for interesting reading. Phishing stands out as the predominant form of breach or attack, affecting 84% of businesses and 83% of charities. Subsequently, there’s a smaller incidence of others impersonating organizations in emails or online (35% of businesses, 37% of charities), followed by viruses or malware (17% of businesses, 14% of charities). Cyber attacks can undo all the good work of charities overnight and destroy the trust that charities have painstakingly built over long periods. We have produced this infographic to highlight the types of damage that cyber attacks can potentially do to charities and social service agencies in Singapore. In this digital age, where charities also leverage technologies to improve operational efficiencies, engage stakeholders and raise funds, they are equally susceptible to cyber attacks in which the consequences can include financial, reputational and operational damages. Heron’s CISO-as-a-Service (Cyber Essentials) and Asset-Based Cyber Defence (ABCD) services can help charities strengthen their cyber resilience. In our increasingly digital world, cyber security has never been more important to organisations and none more so than charities. With their donation funds, charities are prime targets for cyber criminals who may look to carry out phishing attacks, produce fraudulent invoices or redirect payments in order to defraud charities of those funds. Equally, charities collect and store sensitive personal information on donors, volunteers, and beneficiaries. This data can be highly valuable to cybercriminals for identity theft, fraud, or even for selling on the dark web. In order to combat such threats, Cyber Essentials is a perfect starting point in terms of ensuring your security basics are in place. It is a government-backed, industry-supported certification scheme which helps your organisation protect itself against cyber-attacks. By achieving Cyber Essentials, your charity can demonstrate its commitment to protecting both personal and financial data. If your charity is interested in learning more about Cyber Essentials, now is the perfect time. As one of the UK’s leading Cyber Essentials certification bodies, URM is delighted to be participating in IASME’s Charity Cyber Essentials Awareness Fortnight 2023, running between the 6 and 17 of November. We will provide accessible Cyber Essentials guidance to charities, as well as offering a £75 discount on certification. This is available to all charities listed on the UK Charity Commission Register. If you represent a registered charity that wants to become #CyberEssentials certified, please contact us on 0118 206 5410 or visit https://lnkd.in/e4q7YNKg

This guide has some practical advice for charities (plus other small to medium sized businesses) and is definitely worth a read. Interesting that ACSC Essential 8 is not mentioned, given the Australian focus, I would think it should. https://lnkd.in/gEtVR7VF
CyberCX has today launched its inaugural Australian Charities Cyber Intelligence Insights report, outlining a series of simple, practical, and low-cost steps charities can take to improve their cyber resilience. The report reveals that the cyber risk level for the charity sector is high, as charities grapple with limited funding and resources, a reliance on third-party IT providers, and hold sensitive data that could be attractive to cyber criminals. “Charities support some of the most vulnerable individuals and are an essential part of our community. Unfortunately, cyber threat actors have no moral compass and don’t respect charitable purposes," said CEO John Paitaridis. “Cyber attacks against the charities sector can have consequential impacts for the financial wellbeing and reputation of affected charities. A cyber attack can also expose the very communities a charity serves to protect,” he continued. Read more in our media release: https://lnkd.in/drSu-Mmv
