Foresight as a culture, not just a tool. We know that anticipatory thinking is one of the most crucial skills for organisations to navigate and make sense of the chaotic present we live in (great article by World Economic Forum btw👇 ). The golden question is how do we not only learn to navigate, but actually THRIVE and create positive impact in these uncertain times? In my humble opinion, the key is in design and radical collaboration. After so many years of trial and error, I can confidently say that a collaborative and design-driven approach to Corporate Foresight not only allows us to better understand the speed and nature of change and its potential implications in our domains of action, but also to turn this change it into powerful creative fuel and momentum for transformation. To go from knowledge to action and from being observers to becoming active builders of the future through our actions in the present. It is not easy though, democratising design-driven foresight practises can be daunting. Design can seem mystical, complex and unapproachable for those who haven't been exposed to it. But as soon as we go beyond tools and methods, and start focusing on creating a culture that fosters critical thinking towards the future and we put people and teams to work, think, reflect and speculate together, magical things happen. Humberto Maturana said that "our suffering is not due to a lack of certainty, but to a lack of trust. We have lost trust in the world, and since we lost trust we want control, and since we want control we want certainties, and since we want certainties we do not reflect." I love the idea that we can use a collaborative design-driven approach to foresight as an avenue to foster trust, and therefore reduce our anxiety towards uncertainty. Last year, I began a journey into strategic foresight and through this uncovered new perspectives on navigating our world. I am happy to share that I am now a Certified Foresight Practitioner accredited by The Global Foresight Advisory Council and TFSX Here are a few insights on why strategic foresight — which taps into head, heart and gut – will be essential for leadership in the years ahead: ▪️In today's era of rapid change and complexity, relying solely on historical data for future decisions is inadequate. ▪️Strategic foresight helps us challenge "educated incapacity" – knowing so much in your areas of expertise that you are the last to sense things are changing. ▪️Thriving organizations and social movements will transcend current trends to identify emerging patterns and seize opportunities for innovation. ▪️While there’s no such thing as future proofing, strategic foresight empowers us to pull ourselves to alternative futures we are dreaming of. By envisioning "simultaneous multiple futures", we can adapt our strategies to succeed in diverse scenarios. I am keen to connect with, and learn from, others in the non-profit and social impact sectors who are integrating futures literacy and strategic foresight into their work.

"Impact Investing is becoming the new norm. We are at the start of an era of more socially conscious investments that do good, whilst making money". This paraphrases a brilliant TedX talk by Sir Ronald Cohen – President of The Global Steering Group for Impact Investment – that he gave to a cohort at London Business School. He focused on the Impact Revolution – and the groundswell of people around the world who are coming together to address the deeply concerning issues of climate change and environmental destruction. Do you know that feeling when you hear a presentation that just makes so much sense that you wake up the following day feeling high energy and motivation to keep fighting for the change you believe needs to happen? I had that experience yesterday listening to Katherine Richardson presenting their ambition with The Transformation Lab. She speaks about the role of research, but I would dare to say that this is relevant for all roles of change makers across industry, policy, finance and communities: "The societal narrative focuses usually on solutions and the word solutions suggest major step changes. But complex adaptive systems like our societies don't usually change in huge, orchestrated step changes. They transform or evolve through many small changes and it is the accumulation of these many small changes that brings about the transformation. We do not need to wait for the big elusive solutions to change our societies, but only if we stop up and consider how (research) results can contribute to a societal transformation, and only if we engage across disciplines to manage our relationship with the earth as a whole and get us out of the existential crisis we find ourselves in. No single societal change can solve the unequal relationship between people and the planet. But by working across disciplines and across the north south divide, we can identify and the small steps we can take to make the changes we need to ensure that we and future generations can thrive.
