Memorial Day is an emotional, poignant, almost sacred day for the Chubak family.
You see, my father's parents grew up in Ukraine and Poland. They were among few survivors in their families as World War II ended, and both were liberated by members of the American Armed Forces. They actually met in a Displaced Persons camp set up by the US Army. Years later, they had the opportunity to pass through Ellis Island, restart their lives and live out their version of the American dream – although their time in Europe would never be forgotten.
On the other side of the world, my mother's parents were born and raised in Queens NY. My grandfather was too young to serve in WWII, but he was quick to find other ways to demonstrate his patriotic ideals. He would tell stories of his time at an air base in Long Island, NY while still in school.
Despite very different back stories and being from very different places, both sides of my family share a deep connection and love for America and an everlasting appreciation for members of our military, veterans, and their families. And have a special place in our hearts to recognize those who gave their last full measure of devotion in service to our country and protection of our world.
Every year on Memorial Day, our family gathers to hoist our nation's flag, which towers proudly over our lawn. This is our way of celebrating and honoring all those who gave their lives for our country, our ideals, and to save people like my grandparents – who wouldn’t be here if it were not for their sacrifice.
Amid the summer celebrations, I encourage everyone to remember why we celebrate – as without these brave individuals, the way we live our lives today would not be possible.
And it is not lost on me that the work we do at Edward Jones gives me the humbling opportunity – and responsibility – to play our part in serving millions of clients, including many veterans and families who will be remembering loved ones this Memorial Day, and in hand, continue to fuel the American dream for many generations to come.
Happy Memorial Day. And God Bless America.

2wSo glad you shared this David - it brings back memories of my dad. He was very 'old school', that is to say, he didn't show or express emotions very much. But he often worked long hours to provide the financial foundation that our family needed. I now have a my ideal job at Edward Jones because of that foundation.
