Mercy Corps Country Director for Kenya, Dr. Kunow Abdi, was interviewed by Voice of America regarding Mercy Corps’ assistance to rural communities in Kenya. The program aims to help these communities preserve rangelands and protect themselves from the impacts of climate change. Abdifatah Dakane, the Mercy Corps ASAL (Adaptation Services for Action and Learning) Adapt Program Manager, was also interviewed. “This is in two perspectives, one is industrialization for sustainability of the free market shelf, a handover from a Mercy Corps-led initiative to a more governmental mandated agency. And the second point is for Mercy Corps strategically. AEI's co-founder Jocelyn Farrington was a Peace Corps volunteer in Niger more than 20 years ago. 20 years ago, Niger's climate was intense and sometimes brutal, and Jocelyn lived in her community doing an exceptionally hard year, when harvests were poor. As a result, all the men migrated for work and the women and children ate leaves off of trees. 20 years later, the reality in Niger is even more bleak and tenuous as climate shifts dramatically. During a recent visit, Jocelyn witnessed how the Niger River had dwindled to almost nothing, and people could walk across.
