#deepfakes and the potential for misinformation and manipulation, particularly in political contexts, should inspire action from policymakers, especially as elections take place across the globe in 2024. Our recent report focused on #deepfakes and the potential for explicit image-based abuse, but all uses and misuses need to be considered when designing regulation. https://lnkd.in/eRVXCCvy Read our research brief here: https://lnkd.in/dwtfhwHp

Deepfakes in the year of mass elections... As fabricated images, videos and audio clips of real people go mainstream, the prospect of a firehose of AI-powered disinformation is a cause for mounting concern. Tools to help users, researchers, and businesses make sense of the world around them will be paramount as we move into an era of online fakery. Volume of #disinformation will likely be unreal this 2024 election cycle. Cheap to produce (hello AI platforms), easy to disseminate (looking at you social media), and rooted in emotional issues (like that relative on steroids) content will have both direct and indirect messages to divide, sow distrust in government and one another, and the political process. #influence https://lnkd.in/dzUN2C5B

The Age of AI is proving to have a chaotic effect on the information landscape—and at no time is this more true than in election season. In 2022, we released our Election Disinformation report on how effectively digital platforms had countered the “election misinformation war,” meaning the torrent of election misinformation flowing across their platforms. However, as the 2024 elections quickly approach, many of the same issues from before remain unaddressed — with new developments posing even more difficult new challenges. Read our latest article “Lies All the Way Down” – Combating 2024 Election Disinformation” from Policy Director Lisa H. Macpherson and Fellow Rajan Srinivasan for a comprehensive look at the issues that remain unaddressed in combating mis- and dis-information on social media platforms, as well as policy solutions to pursue to mitigate risk.
