🎟️ How DataDome Protected an Event Ticketing Platform from a Distributed Fake Account Creation Attack ⬇️💪 A few months ago, a fake account creation attack targeted a major European ticketing platform where its login & account creation endpoints were vulnerable. The attack lasted for less than 24 hours and consisted of the following: 🔵 299K IP addresses, each making 491 requests on average. 🔵 ~116,666 malicious requests every minute. 🔵 147,000,000 overall fake account creation attempts. Thanks to our multi-layered detection approach, the attack was blocked using different independent categories of signals. 🤖 Because scraping can be a complex challenge, it is common to see a BaaS (Bots as a Service) offered by proxy providers to simplify the task. While BaaS services ease the IP rotation for bots, making attacks scalable even for untrained attackers, they’re not the best solution to stay undetected. Guenaelle De Julis, our Senior Threat R&D Engineer, explains a real-world example of how DataDome detected a scraping BaaS targeting hundreds of #ecommerce websites. #TLDR ➡️ BaaS attacks use behaviors and fingerprints distinguishable from humans. What's more? Through these fingerprints, proxy providers disclose their networks & unless users pay more, BaaS providers route requests through low-quality data center proxies, making them easier to notice and stop. As the highly anticipated Amazon Prime Days approach this July, consumers and retailers alike are gearing up for a flurry of activity. However, amidst the excitement, there is an undercurrent of concern regarding scraper bots and their impact on the shopping experience. Scraper bots are automated tools that scour websites to extract data at an astonishing speed. During major sales events like Amazon Prime Days, these bots become particularly problematic as they target high-demand products to scalp and resell at inflated prices. This practice not only frustrates genuine customers but also disrupts inventory and pricing strategies for retailers. According to our VP of Research Antoine Vastel, bot activity spikes significantly during major online shopping events. These bots are sophisticated enough to mimic human behavior, making them difficult to detect and block with basic security measures. The financial impact of scraper bots on e-commerce platforms can be substantial. Bots can exhaust inventory, causing stockouts and lost sales opportunities for genuine customers. For consumers, this means that some of the deals they eagerly await might disappear before they even have a chance to make a purchase. For Amazon and other e-commerce platforms, it underscores the importance of robust bot protection strategies to ensure a fair and enjoyable shopping experience for all users. As we approach this year's Amazon Prime Days, it is imperative for online retailers to invest in sophisticated bot management solutions to safeguard their platforms against automated threats.
