We are pleased to share our latest paper investigating the relationship between airline service quality, technical efficiency, and the cost of service. We used Skytrax rating to classify airlines into high-perceived and low-perceived quality, while the operational data for estimating airline efficiency were sourced from the ICAO Data+ database. We applied a novel Bayesian generalized directional distance function data envelopment analysis model to minimize distortions due to the sample size, the dimension of the input-output space, and the unbalanced design of the two groups of airlines. Based on the findings of this study, there is no tradeoff between customer satisfaction and airline efficiency, and standardization quality prevails. In addition, airlines could emphasize offering premium products at reasonable prices.
