If we fail to do things differently then we will not address some of the biggest issues facing our industry today. That includes rebuilding trust, tackling news avoidance, and addressing long-term inequities in terms of whose stories get told and who gets to tell them. These notions lie at the heart of a new report that makes the case for a more community-centered approach to journalism and the principles and processes that underpin it. Fundamental to this model is a belief that journalism should not involve reporting “on” a community, but “for” and “with” them. That means stepping away from traditional journalistic practices that have too often been seen as transactional and extractive. In their place, we need to see more journalism that is firmly rooted in partnership, collaboration, and the by-product of deep listening." And that: "There are no easy fixes for journalism’s current travails. But Community-Centered Journalism offers one path forward. If journalism is to be more inclusive, valuable and impactful it must be produced and distributed in fresh ways. That means putting community and civic information needs front and center of everything that we do." More than a year ago DC Thomson's data journalism team started its research into the health of our high streets in Dundee, Aberdeen, Inverness and Perth. That research involved the launch of bespoke trackers for each city, tracking the vacancy rates and the mix of businesses fighting for survival in our city centres. And last night the team went one step further with a special High Street Summit held at DC Thomson's HQ in Dundee city centre. Hosted by The Courier editor David Clegg it saw presentations from DC Thomson's head of data journalism Lesley-Anne Kelly and Matt Colledge who led successful transformations in Altrincham and Stockton. Those were followed by a panel debate and audience Q&A involving council leader John Alexander, academics and business owners. It made for a hugely informative evening where the passion for change was palpable. But the complexity of the problem, the need for swifter action and the need for everyone - the council, the public, universities, and businesses to work as one - also shone through. The event will be followed by extensive coverage (including the results of our own exclusive survey which asked more than 500 Dundonians their views on the city centre) in print and online in The Courier soon. And one final plea. This type of journalism, where our teams are not only investigating issues but playing a central role in creating public debate and change, can only be funded by you - the readers and advertisers. Newsrooms of the future will look different than #newsrooms of the past. But the same principles of good journalism will always apply. ✅ Trust is earned ✅ Do rigorous reporting — there's a difference between covering someone/something and talking about it ✅ Be correct every day ✅ Have rigorous editorial processes to ensure you get everything right ✅ Fact-check every detail ✅ Own up to mistakes when you get anything wrong ✅ Be transparent about processes and ethics ✅ Explain the who, what, where, when, why, and how of story production ✅ Be objective and subject all sides to the same equal interrogation of positions and statements — this leads to the truth ✅ Ask the right questions — challenging questions, rigorous questions ✅ Focus on the unexciting topics that are most important to the public interest ✅ Drill down on the things that matter The current news and journalism ecosystem in the United States is not working well. The good news is that every American can help transform journalism and strengthen the news industry. We can restore faith in journalism. We can create more connected communities where everyone has the opportunity to thrive. The way we get there will require some paradigm shifts in #journalism and #education. It starts with #localnews. Those shifts are in motion and getting stronger. Those shifts will create positive ripples in the world. Finally catching up with Nieman Journalism Lab predictions for 2024 after a wonderful winter break. Favourite one so far is from Jeremy Gilbert, about the need for publishers to serve younger audiences better and more creatively: ❝Younger audiences have not been shy about telling news publishers what they want. Scripps News is announcing the launch of the Disinformation Desk, a team dedicated to exposing sources of disinformation and examining how it spreads. The six-person Disinformation Desk will formally launch in June. “The Disinformation Desk represents an investment in high-quality investigative reporting as deepfake technology threatens to further erode consumer trust in what they see and hear,” said Christina Hartman, vice president and head of Scripps News. “This team will produce industry-leading work in one of the most important emerging beats in journalism.” Read more in today's press release 👇 #journalism #politics #disinformation

The loss of the last print newspaper in #Kamloops closes the chapter on an incredible era of community journalism. Newspapers are dying, and with them we lose a public service that is not always matched by digital media. Profit online is lower and the newsrooms of today are much smaller than those of daily newspapers that once thrived. There are simply fewer journalists in the world today. Is the newspaper a medium we will miss? Some will, many won't. My hope is for new tech that makes news profitable again and for well-staffed newsrooms to return. Someone please invent that—and quickly. On a personal note, the closure of Kamloops This Week is incredibly sad. Working at Kamloops This Week was a brief but formative experience for me. I cut my teeth in that newsroom, under the brilliant editorship of Christopher Foulds, surrounded by the talent of Dale Bass, Cam Fortems, Jessica Wallace, Marty Hastings, Andrea Klassen, Adam Williams and Dave Eagles. I consider my roots in journalism invaluable. The skills I honed there are vital in my career today—writing, interviewing, editing, storytelling. In that newsroom, I met my partner Tim Petruk (an award-winning reporter who is still in the news game and killing it as news director of Castanet). I will never forget attending the Jack Webster Awards with Tim in 2016, representing KTW when he and I were both nominated for community reporting. It is a very special memory, but just one of many from those days. KTW is going out with a bang after being nationally recognized with a Michener Award nomination for public service journalism. This was a big deal for a community paper (I could write much more on praise for my good friend Jessica Wallace.) The silver lining there, I hope: it is not the quality of reporting that is killing newspapers, it is just the old and outdated business model of print. The last edition of Kamloops This Week will be published on Oct. 25.
