This week, I had the opportunity to represent the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation at #AMCPNexus 2023 hosted by AMCP where I shared the Foundation’s recommendations on how payers and providers can work together to optimize cystic fibrosis care and management. Along with our educational partner, Impact Education, LLC, we brought together CF community members, advocates, clinicians, and payers to identify the best ways to interact with each other to overcome barriers to care and treatments faced by so many living with CF. Emergent themes included: Improving communication between providers and payers. Improving prior authorization intervals for CF-specific therapies and bundling those therapies under one prior authorization if possible. Establishing electronic prior authorizations, communicating its value, and encouraging its use.   Instituting coverage criteria that align with current evidence and consensus guidelines, including those coordinated through CF Foundation and widely used by CF care centers. After months in ICUs at some of the world's best medical centers my condition remained a mystery. However when I was transferred to Little Rock, Arkansas, known as the Castleman disease epicenter my bus driver recognized the signs of my condition with just a glance. I think this story highlights a crucial aspect of healthcare: the importance of specialized centers especially for rare disease patients. It demonstrates how concentrated expertise and community familiarity with specific conditions can lead to insights that might elude even the most prestigious general medical institutions. It begs the question: How can we leverage and share the deep, specialized knowledge found in certain communities and centers with the broader medical world? How can we ensure that patients with rare conditions receive care informed by the most knowledgeable and experienced sources? #raredisease #diagnosis #rarediseaseresearch
