To #draft or not to draft. That is the question. Even as the radio chatter is building on the idea of reinstating mandatory military service, it's refreshing to see calmer voices prevail. It's been over 50 years since the draft ended and a number of factors have changed significantly in that time, although the system the draft was built upon -- Selective Service -- has remained essentially unchanged since Nixon was still in the White House. Katherine Kuzminski and Taren Sylvester offer what is probably the most sound advice yet, with a 35-page report, “Back to the Drafting Board,” which details 11 separate recommendations that reflect a much-needed contemporary take on an outdated system: POTUS: 💥 If a draft is required, consider the use of older conscripts within the registered population. NSC: 💥 Run regular full-scale mobilization exercises across the whole of government. DOD: 💥 Assess the military operational requirements in a future conflict, enabling a more tailored approach to future draft mobilization. 💥 Appoint and empower the executive agent for national mobilization within the Department of Defense. 💥 Fully resource and staff Military Entrance Processing Stations (MEPS), particularly physical and medical evaluation processes. 💥 Prepare the professionalized force—especially unit-level commanders and noncommissioned officers—to absorb a conscripted force. 💥 Publish an updated Master Mobilization Plan informed by full-scale mobilization exercises. Congress: 💥 Identify potential legal challenges and impediments to the institution of a modern draft and address them before a draft is necessary. 💥 Reconsider criteria for draft postponements, deferments, and exemptions. Selective Service: 💥 Obtain more detailed information regarding individuals in the Selective Service registration process. 💥 Educate the public about what conscientious objection means and how conscientious objectors will be used in the event of a conflict.
