Before creating this documentary series and getting into my relationships, I had no idea about red flags and that such things existed, except for the times my body felt uncomfortable in certain circumstances, which I couldn’t explain. As a people pleaser, I tended to block all of those triggers and overlook them, telling myself that I was too sensitive or trying to rationalize that there was nothing wrong with this person—they were charming and had a sense of humor. But over time, not listening to those early body sensations made me realize that my body always sends me signals trying to communicate something. My job is to listen to it. If I don’t, I repeat the pattern of being in my head instead of being in my body and my senses. Breaking the pattern of being a people pleaser means being able to listen to your body and act based on what your body tells you. Even now, I still struggle with this many times as there are so many signals coming from our body, sometimes from past traumas and a lack of trust. Have you ever ignored red flags in a relationship? What made you overlook them? Feel free to share your thoughts and experiences in the comments below! #RedFlags #AbusiveRelationships #DomesticViolenceAwareness #Exposit88Stories #HealingJourney #ListenToYourInstincts #MentalHealth #DocumentarySeries #SubscribeNow
In the second episode of our documentary series “Exposit 88 Stories,” we delve into the topic of red flags in relationships. Our expert, Lisa A. Romano explains the dynamics of being in the cycle of an abusive relationship and why we often ignore these warning signs. Another speaker, @Caroline Markel Hammond shares her own experiences and the lessons she learned from red flags. Did you know that studies show that up to 85% of domestic violence victims ignored early warning signs? It’s time to start listening to our instincts and recognizing these signals earlier. There are certain elements of violent crimes that lend traumatic events to sensational media coverage: - When a victim doesn’t fit the “typical” victim profile - The availability of surveillance or cell phone video that gives us access we wouldn’t usually have - When seemingly shocking things, such as dismemberment, are done to the victim’s body The list goes on. But what is the impact on the survivors of these crimes? What extra cost must they bear when any dignity they may have otherwise been afforded goes out the window in an effort to get “the story”? Jan Canty was the first homicide survivor to respond to my survey when I began researching the impact of the media on trauma survivors some 3.5 years ago. It has been nearly four decades since her husband’s sensational murder in Detroit. But the methods she described reporters using to “get the story” are all too familiar today. And what a shame that is. We must do better as journalists, as victim service providers, as investigators, to support trauma survivors through onslaughts of media coverage. Listen to or watch my full conversation with Jan wherever you get your podcasts. Better yet, subscribe, rate, review, and share The Trauma Beat podcast so the stories of survivors like Jan will be visible to more people. #thetraumabeat #homicide #sensational #journalism #media #trauma #murder #survivorsupport #victimservices #traumainformedpractice #traumainformedcare #traumainformedjournalism #authorsoflinkedin #authorsofinstagram #authorsoffacebook #authorsoftiktok #authorsofbooktok #BookTok

Very interesting snippet on some research as to why adults may not report child abuse. Children need adults that feel confident in “what to know, and what to do about it” Prevention Starts with Parents has free resources, a workbook, and trainings to sign up for to help with this! https://lnkd.in/gwzBnPVg
Why don't people report child abuse? Dr. Wendy Walsh of the Crimes Against Children Research Center at the University of New Hampshire joined One in Ten podcast to explore how we can overcome those barriers. #ItsYourBusiness to report child abuse.
