As much as I’d like to say “looks like a great job!”, this kind of post makes my blood boil. Just from this brief paragraph, this role needs to be divided into at least two, if not three different positions. Social media management is a full-time job. Email marketing is a full-time job. Content creation - when done right and effectively - is a full time job. More employers need to recognize that the “and other duties as required” part of job descriptions needs to go if they want to keep employees from burning out and turning over.

This is a very astute analysis of a complicated and often misunderstood corporate topic. While there are some similar competencies needed for success for both, these are for the most part not interchangeable disciplines. They require different skillsets and the flexing of completely different parts of the brain. One thing I would add is that (unfortunately) marketing is also more often seen as more connected to the revenue center of the business, while comms is seen as a cost center, thus more disposable. I've been working in public relations for two decades. I've had four different roles in three different industries. A lot differs from when I started, especially in how people digest their news. So much has changed, except for one thing: people still confuse PR for marketing. It is not the same thing; close...but not the same. And understanding that is going to help businesses understand what they should expect from us. If I had a $1 for every time someone has asked me to pitch something that needs marketing $'s behind it, I'd have lots of $'s... It's frustrating because the pitch doesn't result in attention, and then people wonder, "why?" In the dynamic realm of communications, it's crucial to understand that PR and Marketing are distinct yet interrelated disciplines. A PR professional's role is not synonymous with that of a marketer. Here are 3 key differences to help clarify their unique contributions: Objective Focus: Marketing primarily aims to promote products or services, focusing on driving sales/lead generation and revenue. It's all about showcasing what a company offers and persuading the audience to buy. Conversely, PR centers on managing and nurturing relationships between an organization and its various stakeholders. PR professionals are more concerned with reputation, credibility and building trust over the long term. Audience Engagement: Marketing efforts are often geared towards a target audience, and the messaging is crafted to appeal to their needs, desires and pain points. It's transactional in nature. PR operates in a broader sphere, engaging customers, the media, employees, investors and the public. It's about creating a positive image and fostering goodwill. Content and Channels: Marketing heavily relies on advertising, paid media and promotional content. The emphasis is on direct messaging through channels like advertisements, social media ads, and email campaigns. PR uses earned media, such as press coverage, interviews and editorial content. It involves storytelling, crisis management, and creating narratives that resonate with the media and the public. So, when I tell you that this pitch won't get media attention, know that... Effective PR is not just about sending out press releases or pitches; it's about understanding what the media values. A pitch can fall flat if it doesn't offer a compelling story, lacks relevance to current events or fails to address the needs of the journalist's audience. I think that understanding these distinctions is crucial when collaborating with your PR team. While marketing and PR may share common goals, our strategies, tactics, and approaches differ significantly! By harnessing the unique strengths of both, you can achieve a strategy that builds brand value and sustains positive relationships in a more comprehensive and holistic approach.

Hello, friends. It’s been an awesome 4 years at Trysail and the team is growing. I’m looking for a part-time account executive-type, ideally with PR agency experience. The role is a PR account executive meets project manager. It’s part-time. 20-ish hours per week, flexible timing. I’m looking for a self-starter who is eager to learn and wants to be a key person on my small team. Ideal location would be Buffalo or DC, but wherever works in today’s world. I run a boutique public affairs agency – Trysail Strategies. We build full advocacy campaigns for clients – website, video, messaging, social, earned media, advertising. And we execute media relations campaigns for others – working to elevate public policy issues through earned media. And I do a fair amount of crisis communications. Trysail has three to five active clients at a time, and this person would touch most of them. This role is 90% client work, and 10% agency admin tasks. Most of the time will be spent supporting clients doing substantive, important work. And that work is for clients you can feel good about. I am committed to working only with clients you’d be proud to be associated with – a HUGE perk of working with Trysail and the best part of being independent. Other successful project managers for Trysail have been out of the working world for a time but wanted to get back into it while still having time and flexibility to be home. I think that model is ideal. And this role is ideal for someone looking for that type of balance. A day in the life would look like spending time in the morning tagging news in Meltwater (a media monitoring and reporting tool). Then you might be refining a social calendar to schedule. And later you might blast out a pitch to a curated media list in the hopes of getting someone to reply they are interested. You might be helping to schedule an interview for a client. Tara has really struck a chord with this post. The role of comms is often misunderstood and doesn't get the recognition it deserves. 😔 This lack of understanding leads to tensions. Not just between comms and marketing, but also among: - comms and business areas (clients) - channel teams within multidisciplinary comms teams - comms and leadership - the funding and resourcing decision makers. We all face the same frustrations because we don't fully grasp the value each function brings. But the solution is simple 💪 We must band together! We need to: 🙌 respect each other's expertise 🎓 educate ourselves on the purpose, processes, and pain points of each function 🤝 foster relationships and work together to deliver a consistent and complementary service 📣 celebrate and promote each team's achievements, and advocate for each other across the organisation. If I had a dollar for every time I heard a comms professional murmur 'Why didn't they let us know about this work earlier?' I'd be rich. No one team should be the information gatekeeper - we should all be alerted to the need for our services at the same time so we can work together to deliver a cohesive and coordinated service. One way of achieving this is through a shared job logging and workflow system.
