Reading this article has helped me to see what a great mutual decision it is for Guttman to choose me and for me to accept. This is the intersection of many things that are important to me as this article bears out: supporting neurodiversity (both inside and outside of my family), educational support and impact, and being an active change agent towards academic success! Freedom of speech v/s hate speech and action on college campuses I've now watched the entire C-SPAN proceedings on the congressional hearings where 3 Presidents of Ivy League institutions gave testimony (Harvard, MIT and UPenn) - https://lnkd.in/gngvNWPt Its an important issue and inflection point for the generations that will hold us account to, thus posting about it here on LinkedIn. Educational institutions are considered vanguards of a safe and thriving space to argue, debate, learn more about opposing views, find common ground (or not). History is important and paramount, to know where we come from, to inform where we go and the choices we make as humanity. When I was growing up, I was taught history as a separate subject (in addition to civics, math, english, etc) - India's history, the world history, the World Wars. I don't see history taught/explored in the curriculum today, with the emphasis it needs, or with the sort of deep-dive that it needs. How are we to imagine ourselves and how are our children meant to relate to their origins, their identity, without a grounding in history? We have many ill-informed young adults coming into colleges, with no idea about the history, who then are spouting things which they aren't actually aware of. Are we depriving our children of historical insight, in our school systems, overall? I think, we are. #wokeness #school #identity #hatespeech #historymatters

"We all grew up hearing that 'Quitters never win, and winners never quit.' But quitting is an essential part of life, and no one should be scorned for their decision to quit college. However, because there are so many benefits to a degree that go beyond just dollars and cents, it's critical we consider how colleges can judiciously and ethically take advantage of the status quo bias, sunk cost bias, and other psychological principles to help more students graduate. In the end, by better understanding why and how to quit, we also better understand why and how to persist." It was so encouraging to see Christ College -- The Honors College highlighted in David Brooks' article in the September 2023 issue of The Atlantic as an example of how a core curriculum like CC's Freshman Program might be one of the needed elements to rebuild morally formative institutions in modern American life. Brooks wrote: "A first-year honors program in this vein at Valparaiso University, in Indiana, involves not just conducting formal debates on ideas gleaned from the Great Books, but putting on a musical production based on their themes. Many of these courses don’t give students a ready-made formula, but they introduce students to some of the venerated moral traditions [...] They introduce students to those thinkers who have thought hard on moral problems [...] They hold up diverse exemplars to serve as models of how to live well. They put the big questions of life firmly on the table." Mark Schwehn further described and analyzed CC's unique curriculum for Valpo first-year honors students in a July 2022 essay in Comment Magazine (https://lnkd.in/em-Wzfdu): "Between eighty and ninety entering students take an eight-semester-credit-hour course each of the first two semesters that consists largely of reading the great works of the human imagination in literature, philosophy, history, and religion, all grouped around the central question, What is the good life? But the other part of the curriculum goes beyond the seminar room. During their first semester on campus, the entire class is required to write, produce, and perform five times for the entire campus their own original musical production, based on one of the themes the readings have introduced. This is the Freshman Production. Over the half century that students have been putting together this production, it has served as a learning laboratory and a character incubator." Brooks' article has led me to reflect on the foundational experience for first year honors students at Valpo - reading, discussing, debating, and interpreting the Great Books. That coursework with students from different parts of the university — the Colleges of Arts and Sciences, Business Administration, Engineering, and Nursing and Health Professions — makes for a fuller educational experience and produces multidisciplinary graduates ready to serve. I thought of Valpo and CC again recently while listening to a panel at the Concordia Annual Summit, where Mike Muse mentioned the importance of interdisciplinary teams in creating new technologies: "Far too often, we focus just on computer science, but we actually do need philosophy majors, sociology majors to think about human conditions..." America needs more morally formed leaders inhabiting its institutions - and I am grateful for Valpo & CC's contributions to that need.
