Smart television set owners are moving away from using cable hookups and antennas to access content and are instead opting to stream content from broadcast and cable channels via platforms like YouTube TV, according to Vizio's Inscape data unit. "With a variety of apps and devices, smart TVs can access live, linear TV airing on broadcast or cable networks. In Q1 2024, nearly a quarter of that 'must-see-live' content was streamed," Inscape says. https://lnkd.in/gc2m3934

Expect the 'TGIF' concept of the late 80s/90s to come back, except this time on YouTube! This one concept made a lot of stars for the network & I don't mean only the actors. The biggest star that came out of this? None other then Mr. Bob Iger! (He was President of ABC Entertainment at the time of launching TGIF.) The only difference between now & the 90s is that there will be a lot more fights over what to watch together as a family. In the 90s, you had to watch what the Network played during the time slot. While this article talks mostly about movies, except YouTube & its creators to start making proper TV like scheduled content in the near future. #TV || #OTT || #YouTube || #ContentMarketing || #Programming

Earlier this week I hypothesised that Family Movie Night might become Family YouTube Night. Here’s an article by Precise TV about how YouTube is the main streaming app in the living room and what that means for advertisers. “YouTube has transformed co-viewing from the static confines of the living room to a dynamic, interactive online environments via a myriad of devices used by families on the go – from phones to tablets and BACK into the home again. This evolution reflects not only changing viewer habits but also the increased relevance of digital platforms in facilitating connections through content.” Link in comments

Co-viewing is very closely paired with Co-doing for Millennial families. So interesting to see that YouTube is emerging as the Co-viewing platform of choice. It is the case in my own family with our sons constantly sharing videos and comments found there with us no matter where we are. It's worth looking at what Co-viewing really breaks down as. There is a very significant part of it that is snippets and bits for shared laughs, shared news, and shared interests straight out of casual surfing. I will be quite interested to see how high is up relative to expanding shared viewing of long form sitting down at larger screens. One further note, I think that the Co-doing knock-on after Co-viewing is quite the frontier. Millennial families have demonstrated clearly they prefer experiences vs the acquisitive lifestyle. Co-viewing is the entry point for deciding to do things together. with Millennials being ad-allergic, creating that bridge to your products and services would seem to suggest YouTube content is the play not ads.

Interesting observations from Omdia's Tony Gunnarsson. A more nuanced view on audience migration to SVOD, proposing that markets will most likely reach some sort of equilibrium, with “players that can combine linear TV, SVOD and AVOD most likely to succeed.” https://lnkd.in/eCkwEKc4

According to Forbes, Nielsen’s most recent Gauge Report shows streaming continues to outpace cable’s audience share. However, not everyone has embraced cutting the cord despite opportunities to save and more convenient ways to watch programs on demand. As set-top boxes become obsolete and many manufacturers stop supporting certain equipment, there is increased urgency to update viewers’ technology. Still, some customers want to preserve a “traditional” method of watching TV. In response, EPB launched the new EPB Fi TV Entertainment Box, which delivers programming via the world’s fastest community-wide internet but looks and works like the set-top box and traditional TV experience many customers prefer. EPB Tech Pros will set up the new equipment in customer homes and show them how to use it. The biggest benefit for most customers who don’t want to switch out their equipment is that they will hardly notice any change at all. EPB Tech Pros are committed to connecting customers with the programming they want at the best price, whether that’s with our Fi TV, streaming services or both. Using our dependable fiber optic internet, customers can depend on uninterrupted service, unparalleled quality and local customer service 24/7/365. Whether you prefer tradition or are comfortable with something else, EPB can help you design a TV package and take greater control of TV costs. We’re available 24/7/365 at EPB.com or 423-648-1372. https://lnkd.in/gfr6Q-YR

Great work by the Deutsche TV-Plattform on capturing the most important use cases for DVB-I, at least for the German market. (While the report is published only in German, it's short enough to run comfortably through your translation tool of choice. 😉) The full list of use cases described is as follows: 1. Transfer of the familiar user experience of linear TV to streaming 2. Findability (prominence, regionalization) 3. Securing horizontal market models 4. Independence from individual distribution technologies 5. Control of distribution according to economic and ecological aspects 6. Expanded additional services 7. Linking linear and non-linear use (metadata, content discovery) 8. New programmes and channels (playlists, event streams, applications) 9. Customer journey across device boundaries 10. Revenue models, subscription services and digital rights management https://lnkd.in/eHFw_ysC
