How To Stand Out In Your First 3 Months At The New Job via Forbes

Two weeks ago today I got laid off. It blindsided me and very unceremoniously chucked me back onto the job market after over 10 years. I was so stressed I had no appetite and was barely sleeping. I wish I was exaggerating. I applied to probably hundreds of jobs and the one thing that became immediately and painfully apparent was that, in this market, it seems like if you don’t know someone who can refer you it’s almost impossible to get your resume viewed. And then, something miraculous happened: my resume was viewed. A wonderful recruiter called me. She scheduled a virtual interview for me on Thursday. On Friday, an onsite interview where I spent 2 hours with the hiring managers…the team…touring the campus. And then, 2 hours after getting home, I received a call from that wonderful recruiter with an offer. I verbally accepted the position holding back tears (again, I wish I was exaggerating). I could’ve wallowed in stress and self-pity, could’ve wondered “why me” til the cows came home but I chose to change my mindset and today, 2 weeks to the day that I got laid off, I start a new journey with an employer I am genuinely excited to work for and a team I am genuinely excited to work with. The TL:DR of this very long post is this: when God closes a door, He opens a window, and, sometimes, all it takes to see that window is a mindset shift. There are 3️⃣ reasons why I never gave up despite this job search taking over 6 months... This placement had been a roller coaster... I'd done it, I'd found a candidate that had WOW'd the client beyond belief. It was the perfect fit all round. Everyone was so happy. Then an email arrived, they'd accepted a counter offer (which rarely work out, but that's another post...) I was absolutely gutted. I knew I'd exhausted the market to make this placement. And now I had to go again. But here is why I kept at it. Every. Day. 1️⃣ I'd filled multiple hires with this client, when I spoke with candidates, I knew quickly if they'd be the right fit culturally as well as experience. 2️⃣ Not refilling this role was NOT an option for me. I'd done it before. I CAN do it again. 3️⃣ I love a challenge. I thrive when I having to think outside the box, finding new routes that others haven't. The hussel is exciting. It taught me a new level of resilience when I was hitting multiple dead ends. But when I spoke to the right candidate, I knew I'd filled the position again. For those of you that have been laid off, riffed, or kicked to the curb, some advice from personal experience. "Mindset Conditioning" is a prerequisite! Understand first that people that have jobs (interviewers) are often unkind to those that need jobs. You're going to need to develop calluses and nerves of steel to manage your interactions with these egomaniacs. Deep breaths... You must also come to terms with the fact that since you are out of work, hiring managers will think there's something wrong with you by default. They will wonder why you got laid off if you're such a great salesperson. Plan on spending time rehearsing in advance your explanation of why you're out of work. Don’t write off a candidate just because they were laid off. There are 2 very different types of people post-layoff: Type 1: - victim mindset - complains constantly - negative outlook - blasts out 100s of random applications and blames everyone but themselves when they don’t land interviews Type 2: - non-stop hustle - networks their *ss off - does whatever they need to do to create sucess - pivots role, pivots insustry, reads books, hires career coaches, finds free resources, offers fractional consulting, bags groceries if they have to to make ends meet before they land their next gig So, yes - if you meet type 1, run for hills. But if you meet type 2, snap them up before your competitor does.
