We’ve released our latest forecast today which puts us on track to deliver strong returns to growers and reach our goal of $4.5 billion in global sales revenue by 2025. Our June indicative forecast for the 2024/25 season reflects improved yields and the industry’s largest ever crop of 197 million packed trays. Forecast per hectare OGRs have increased from last season, with the mid-point of current ranges above last season’s final per hectare returns for all pools. Green and Organic Green forecast per hectare returns are expected to be at record levels. CEO Daniel Mathieson says while there are some challenges this season, we’re continuing to see strong demand, with the industry’s efforts to deliver consistently high quality fruit supporting strong sales in key markets. 🚢 US pistachio shipments are booming, with April up 9% and year-to-date shipments 50% higher than last year. Demand is strong globally, especially in Europe and China, and even domestically after lagging sales. The 2024 crop forecast is positive, with minimal carryover and continued consumer interest. The earlier Chinese New Year and slightly later harvest suggest high demand for early shipments this fall, which the report's issuer says they can deliver. https://lnkd.in/engKhncj

Although Charles Dickens described the state of English society when he penned “A Tale of Two Cities” in 1859, the novel’s opening line could have just as easily been talking about today’s ag retail marketplace. Based on the 2023 CropLife 100 survey data, this year had many “best times” moments. Unfortunately, there were also many “worst times” moments as well. First, let’s look at some of the “best times” moments. And since this year represents the 40th time CropLife magazine has compiled a listing of the nation’s top ag retailers, some historical perspective is in order. Back in 1984, when the first CropLife 100 was put together, the sales range for the companies on the list was between $5 million and more than $80 million. In 2023, annual sales in the $80 million range would land an ag retailer in the mid-sixties out of the 100 largest companies, with 59 ag retailers on the 2023 listings recording yearly sales of more than $100 million. At the other end of the spectrum, an ag retailer would need to have double $5 million in annual sales just to make the list at all! According to BBG (British Berry Growers) chairman Nick Marston growers have reported that many retailers were only buying on price. Over the past 25 years soft fruit production has grown by 600% in the UK. It has grown from £206m in 1996 to more than £1.5bn today. In the case of Blueberries, production in the UK has grown significantly from 281 tonnes in 2008, in 2023 it is expected to be over 6,000 tonnes, however over 45,000 tonnes are imported. We have seen growth in production year after year but that is coming, or has come, to an end. According to The Grocer, in raspberries, production costs have risen by 21.2p per 200g, while shelf prices have risen by 19p per pack – but average returns to growers are up just 11.4p per pack. The only berry in decline this year was raspberries, which Marston attributed to disproportionately high labour costs forcing growers to scale back production. Raspberry plants are purchased and take two years to get to full production so why would any Grower invest in new bushes? The same is also happening with blueberries, Growers are not purchasing new stock, which takes up to four years to be at full production. What are Retailers relying on? They are banking on someone else doing it cheaper. Poland, Peru? Cultivated blueberry production volume in Peru which has increased from 135,000 tonnes in 2019 to 299,000 tonnes in 2022. The UK imports about 14,500 tonnes from Peru, that is about 5% of their production. Is the UK an easy country to deal with, either importing or dealing with UK Retailers? The answer is 'no'. So what will happen when UK Retailers become more demanding, with tighter specifications & expectations that they get lower prices? The answer is that Peru will look for alternatives, and there are many! Nick Marston has warned that retailers could be forced to import berries at a greater scale “if we don’t see improved returns in the UK” – but would struggle to meet demand. They will struggle to meet demands because they won't be able to get the costs they are looking for! When I go into most of the Retailers an area that seems to suffer, consistently, from poor availability is berries. Raspberries seem to be the ones least likely to be available, now I know why! When will Buyers remember that they job is to make sure that they have product on shelf first, empty shelves mean missing sales and profit. That is what a Buyer is employed to deliver, sales and profit! We have had shortages in eggs (which lasted 9 months), salad & are now seeing shortages in berries. What will be up next? As Customers do we have to get used to empty shelves because Buyers can't do their jobs? It would seem that the answer is yes! Two-thirds of growers in the BBG survey said they had little confidence in the future, and confidence in their retail partners had been dented. The Citrus Growers' Association (CGA) predicts growth in overall export volumes as the busy season begins. The association predicts that 37.9 million (15kg) cartons of lemons will be exported to key markets, an increase of 7% over last year. Orange exports are expected to rise 4% for navel oranges, with 25.6 million cartons expected to be packed. Valencia orange export production is likely to improve in 2024 and return to its long-term trajectory, increasing 12% to 58 million cartons. Grapefruit exports are predicted to increase back up to the long-term average, with 14% growth resulting in 16.7 million cartons. The satsuma season is expected to close around the 1.7 million mark, while clementines and novas are expected to reach 5.4 million and 4.5 million, respectively. The industry could potentially reach 200 million cartons in the next four years and possibly 260 million cartons by 2032. However, the CGA warns that the industry still fears equipment breakdowns and disruptions that could affect the export season.
