Interesting publication from Labour today which appears to be its answer to the Government's Levelling Up agenda. Interesting planning related tit-bits include; 300 more Council planners, targets of 300,000 homes a year, and commitment to urgent planning reform. The 2024 UK general election has seen Keir Starmer and the Labour Party secure a resounding majority. This victory has particularly transformed the political landscape in the North East, which is now overwhelmingly dominated by Labour MPs. This of course follows the recent election of Labour's Kim McGuinness as Mayor of The North East Combined Authority. But what does this mean for #SMEs, #sustainability and the #NorthEast region? Our first MRP of the 2024 general election shows Labour winning a majority of 194, larger than even Tony Blair's landslides. The Conservatives would be reduced to 140 seats. The model uses survey data from almost 60,000 respondents. The data also shows the Lib Dems climb to 48 seats while the Greens finally win a second seat. Labour also sees significant gains in Scotland at the expense of the SNP, while Reform UK is still unlikely to win any seats. To delve deeper into the data: https://lnkd.in/eWM-aVib

The British public are waking up this morning to a new #PrimeMinister after #Labour won a landslide victory. What will this mean in terms of recruitment and when will changes happen? 👉King’s Speech Labour’s policy programme becomes clear on July 17 when the #KingsSpeech opens the new Parliament. 👉Legislative Agenda With Parliament open, Labour will likely kickstart its #legislativeagenda before summer recess. This includes the introduction of new workers’ rights to bring a “new deal for working people". It would involve an end to #zerohourcontracts, fire-and-rehire practices and easing “restrictions on union activity”. Areas where policy will only be decided after the election include #defencestrategy, #UniversalCredit policy, changes to #parentalleave and #pensionreform. 👉First Budget The last significant act of Labour’s first 100 days will be the party’s first #Budget since 2009. #generalelection

Adding to my immediate previous post, the link should take you to Survation's 3 June MRP-based analysis. Since 2017 MRP, which assessed the probable winner in every individual constituency, has proved itself to be a pretty reliable basis for forecasting UK election outcomes. Noting that this particular survey was done four weeks before the election itself and much can change in the intervening period it should nevertheless be taken seriously. https://lnkd.in/dafzzCvM

Each Labour seat in Parliament required on average nearly 35,000 votes whereas the 4 Green Party Seats required nearly half a million each. That is not fair and does not produce good democratic government. In the UK we worry that PR will produce unworkable coalition government making poor decisions. Are we that naive that we think the evidence of First Part The Post has been a roaring success? What we need is decision making that reflects the needs of all of us, not just those with money and influence. Useful insight into Labour's manifesto process for public affairs professionals and anyone else interested: - Shadow Ministers must submit policy ideas and proposals by 8 February. - Proposals will be reviewed by a committee of Shadow Ministers and officials to decide what would need legislation in a King's Speech to be delivered shortly after a general election. - The manifesto and draft King's Speech will be ready by mid-March in case of a May election. Key manifesto measures likely to include a target of building 300,000 new homes per year and Labour insiders have suggested that managed development on the green belt will be used as an example of how Labour will tackle difficult problems.
