As the Madrid chapter closes, I extend my deepest gratitude to Julius Bär — Sandra Wassermann and Dr. Maximilian Strecker — for orchestrating an enlightening experience. A heartfelt thank you to Dr. Sven Jungmann for sharing his journey, to José Luis Cordeiro for his profound insights into healthy aging, and to the passionate team from Ani Biome for unveiling their pioneering work. Equally, my appreciation goes out to every participant, speaker, and organizer who was a part of this great journey. Our conversations spanned a spectrum of topics, with longevity emerging as a vital piece of a larger puzzle. We delved into various subjects, each intersecting with the next, painting a holistic picture of our future health landscape. Reflecting on the broader dialogue, it’s clear that while the world is a powerhouse of academic research, there’s a pressing need to translate this knowledge into entrepreneurial action. The journey from research to real-world application is fraught with challenges, yet it is here that the greatest potential for societal impact lies. We discussed the importance of addressing inflammation and enhancing our microbiome, not just as singular topics, but as part of a comprehensive approach to health. The shift towards treating the underlying causes of age-related diseases is gaining momentum, signaling a transformative era in healthcare. Brilliant plenary presentation by Silvia Cerolini from Eyes on the Future in the opening session of Frontiers Health 2023. Triggering for someone who is living through his own child’s health problem, but I wasn’t the only person welling up. Silvia posed a serious challenge around real, meaningful partnership with patients and patient-centricity. Hands shot up around the auditorium (mine included) to claim our organisations were patient-centric. Then shot up again (yes, mine too) to chastise the industry for not being patient-centric enough. Are we preaching to the converted in a Frontiers echo chamber? Are we lacking in self awareness or honesty? Were we all processing our own short comings and limitations while still feeling on balance our hands needed to go up? Speaking personally, even though RareCan was set up from personal/patient experience and we are driven by what’s important for patients with rare cancers, I definitely can’t claim we have nailed patient partnership and centricity. Yes my hand went up twice. And yes we sit in both camps and strive to become ever more patient-centric. Thanks Silvia, really important contribution at the start of the event.
