Exercising caution with microbiome companies, particularly those emerging to capitalize on the latest wave of publications in the field and those engaging in direct-to-consumer sales, is advisable. When it comes to reproductive health, a few things patients are entitled to know are: ☑ What defines a "normal microbiota"? Before we start diagnosing dysbiosis, it's crucial to establish a baseline understanding of what constitutes a healthy, balanced microbiome. Unfortunately, not all providers have invested the necessary time or resources into acquiring this foundational knowledge. For #EMMA and #ALICE, we prioritized fundamental scientific research to characterize the microbiota of infertile patients who have experienced live births. This groundwork allows us to begin delineating what qualifies as "normal" in this context: https://lnkd.in/gY93_tJn ☑ Is there empirical evidence supporting the efficacy of the microbiome test and adherence to its recommended treatment in real-world scenarios? Fortunately, for the patients who are referred to us, we also got that covered: https://lnkd.in/g6GAPnEM. While this serves as a first step, further evidence is undoubtedly required. ☑ Merely characterizing the microbiota isn't sufficient; we must consider the subsequent treatment based on that characterization. Identifying the viruses present in the endometrium, for example, is of little value when we do not possess a corresponding treatment protocol. #EMMA and #ALICE recommend antibiotic treatments based on international microbiological guidelines. This treatment is tailored to the specific bacterial species identified in the sample, ensuring a more targeted and effective intervention. We can improve human health by better understanding the microbiome. However, it's imperative that the same level of rigor governing research is also applied to companies seeking to provide microbiome services.
