Leads almost certainly aren't your problem. Marketing is about doing things in the right order: 1. You need to product-market fit before nailing your customer experience 2. You need a great customer experience before obsessing over sales 3. You need an effective sales function before scaling leads 4. You need to know how to generate leads before growing your brand The ugly truth is most companies haven't figured out step 1. And throwing leads at the problem isn’t likely to help. (Not least as they won’t know what a good lead is) So the next time your CEO sets an elephant sized lead target (most likely accompanied by a gerbil sized budget), maybe suggest they take that money and invest it fixing the real problem. Unless leads really are the issue - then pull your finger our you lazy toe rag. Side note - This is why the best marketers involve themselves in EVERY corner of the business. Particularly the ones they're not welcome. #DigitalMarketing #FirstThingsFirst #Strategy
You’ve got a solid point about getting basics right before ramping up. But how do you convince higher-ups to pump the brakes on lead targets and focus on foundational issues without coming off as a naysayer? Any advice on navigating that tricky conversation?
Brilliantly said Dan 👏. Love the 'elephant sized lead target accompanied by a gerbil sized budget' - this is something that often happens with websites - high expectations, low budget.
Needed to see this today Dan Holt, thank you!
marketing is a means of communication. not a silver bullet for bad product, low demand, no market or subpar customer experience. at best, marketing is taking what works in sales and scaling it. Also, the best marketing is word of mouth, but you get that when you have all the other things ✅
I just thought about this the other day, how important it is to do things in the right order. And how often I got this wrong 👀 product market fit and market validation for a service or product are so important, it's worth to spend a lot of time on these. And figure out almost everything else after that. Thanks for sharing this!
Investing in the right areas, building a great product, crafting an amazing customer journey is the key to sustainable growth.
Great points Dan 🤟 I'll add one word.. Marketing is about doing things in the right order "AT THE RIGHT TIME"
Love this! We do have some things to do before we can take the lead 😀
Or they don't want to listen when you beg them to fit their product to the market... so frustrating!

2wSo many businesses look in the wrong places. When the biggest growth driver is staring them in the face. Product Market Fit and positioning. Get these right and you are not wasting money or time. A cross-functional exercise as opposed to a silo'ed approach. Great post.
