During a conversation today, I realized not everyone understands the implications of the words they say, and thus cannot grasp the terror felt by Jewish friends and colleagues when they hear these chants. Definitions are provided by the Anti-Defamation League: "Globalize the Intifada" The chant references two periods of violence against Israel – in the late 1980s and from 2000-2005 – during which terrorists committed indiscriminate acts of violence against Israelis. These included suicide bombings, shootings, and stabbings targeting people on city buses, in restaurants, or at nightclubs, resulting in over 1,000 deaths. This slogan is generally understood as a call for indiscriminate violence against Israel and against Jews and Jewish institutions worldwide. [Source: https://lnkd.in/eis6ew-8] "From the River to the Sea Palestine Will be Free" The chant is an antisemitic charge denying the Jewish right to self-determination, including the removal of Jews from Israel. Usage of this phrase understandably makes members of the Jewish and pro-Israel community feel unsafe and ostracized. It is important to note that demanding justice for Palestinians or calling for a Palestinian state should not mean, as this phrase posits, denying the right of the State of Israel to exist. [Source: https://lnkd.in/ec9nuWxU] "Israel is an Apartheid State" Apartheid typically refers to the policy of racial segregation in pre-1990s South Africa. Within Israel, safeguards ensure the equal treatment of all citizens, Jewish or Arab, and democratic institutions uphold these rights. Israeli Arab citizens play prominent roles in society, representing over 20% of the population. While Israel’s policies can be criticized, they are not akin to a permanent and institutionalized system motivated and designed by racism. The accusation of apartheid serves to demonize the entire state rather than challenge specific policies. Educating ourselves about antisemitic tropes is crucial for challenging misinformation and promoting accurate representations of Jewish history and identity. By countering stereotypes and myths with factual information, together we can contribute to dispelling harmful prejudices and fostering greater understanding and tolerance. https://lnkd.in/e5VHVw74
