Happy National Ocean Month! The 3rd National Workshop on Marine eDNA at John Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory kicked off today with the announcement of a US National Strategy for Aquatic eDNA! We are talking about biological monitoring and assessments, standards, technology transfer and adoption, and best practices for eDNA applications. Read the National Strategy for Aquatic eDNA here: https://lnkd.in/eNBmWiu4 The U.S. National Strategy for a Sustainable Ocean Economy & National Ocean Biodiversity Strategy were also announced today. #DOE #WPTO is working with #ORNL and #PNNL and partners to advance the use of eDNA for #renewableenergy applications and to develop commercially available eDNA monitoring technologies. #eDNA #blueeconomy #ocean #environmental #naturepositive #monitoring #aquatic #biodiversity #CHOW2023 #sustainability #marineenergy

Big news today -> #DOE #WPTO has launched a Hydropower Testing Network that universities, institutions of all types, and public and private labs can join to host R&D testing with funding from WPTO! Phase 1 is now open to connect #technology developers to #testing capability providers. Testing capabilities of interest include but are not limited to: 1) #hydraulic 2) #mechanical #material, and #structural 3) #electrical and #electronic & 4) #biological and #aquatic testing. WPTO invites academic institutions and private, national, and federal laboratories to apply to become a test facility (or voucher provider) during the now open Phase I with facilities that have existing capabilities to test hydropower technologies. #hydropower #fishpassage #testing #researchanddevelopment #renewableenergy #innovation #commercialization #freshwater #sustainability Join us: https://lnkd.in/eeqHZpEE

I heard the words "data centers" too many times yesterday, probably because analyses by the IEA have made it into most popular press: "Data centres are significant drivers of growth in electricity demand in many regions. After globally consuming an estimated 460 terawatt-hours (TWh) in 2022, data centres’ total electricity consumption could reach more than 1 000 TWh in 2026. This demand is roughly equivalent to the electricity consumption of Japan." As someone concerned about nature, water, and environmental health this has made me pause when considering the many available options for rewriting posts with the voice of a soulless bot among other common uses of AI, and also about the real power and promise of AI to support challenging decision making processes. In the US we currently have the most data centers in the world, with many in Virginia just outside DC. There was some good coverage on regional viewpoints on the NPR Politics Hour from 5/24/24 that focuses on the changes Loudoun County is facing with data center builds and proposals. Working with the energy sector, I have heard many local utilities telling tales of not having the load to support data center power proposal requests over the last few years. A global map of data centers: https://lnkd.in/etBk6PFS 'Electricity 2024' published by the IEA provides the below analysis by sector of changes in global electricity generation with predictions and some other key important take aways on trends: https://lnkd.in/eT89bKdE

I had a great morning on the 'SBIR: Spotlight on DOE Panel' at TechConnect's Spring SBIR/STTR conference. The DOE SBIR staff are reporting more interest than in past years in clean tech and #renewableenergy by the conference's small business participants. The TechConnect Conference is a great event to get face time with R&D funding managers across DOE. We had #Wind, #Bioenergy, and #Water #WPTO represented for applied R&D from #DOE #EERE and Nuclear Physics for basic science on the panel. At #DOE the SBIR/STTR is an annual call for small businesses to get government seed funding to enable proof of concept that can open doors to additional stages of R&D and private investment to develop commercial products. The #DOE Voucher Program is Now Open and Offering $15 Million to Accelerate Clean Energy Technology Adoption - Apply by July 9th! I helped #WPTO pilot a similar voucher program many years ago. It had outcomes of delivering verified testing and performance data from a national lab in the form of peer reviewed literature. It also provided valuable information about social dimensions and barriers to technology transfer. I highly recommend this opportunity to small businesses and clean tech makers. Current Voucher Topics include: - Pre-Demonstration Commercialization Support (OCED) - Performance Validation, Modeling, and Certification Support (OCED) - Clean Energy Demonstration Project Siting/Permitting Support (OCED/EERE) - Commercialization Support (EERE) - Commercialization Support (FECM) - Planning and Validation of Industrial Decarbonization Projects (OCED) - Manufacturing Conversion, Retooling, and Retrofitting Support (OCED) This program’s goal is to help small businesses and other non-traditional partners access testing facilities and expertise to advance their energy projects, offering $15M in funding to support manufacturers and accelerate the adoption of clean energy technologies.
