This year’s Brazil-Russia-India-China-South Africa (BRICS) summit will have a distinctive African flavour. Hosted by its only African member, the meeting has an African theme & will be attended by many #African#leaders as part of an outreach programme. It is expected to consider at least 6 African countries’ applications for #membership.
The theme of the 22-24 August summit is “BRICS & #Africa: #Partnership for Mutually Accelerated #Growth, #Sustainable#Development, & Inclusive Multilateralism”. 67 leaders from the global south have been invited. Significantly, #French president Emmanual Macron — who told Pretoria he would like to attend — hasn’t been invited.
Interest in joining BRICS has surged. At a briefing this week, #SouthAfrica’s international relations Minister Naledi Pandor said while several more nations had shown interest, 23 had formally applied. These were #Algeria, #Argentina, #Bangladesh, #Bahrain, #Belarus, #Bolivia, #Cuba, #Egypt, #Ethiopia, #Honduras, #Indonesia, #Iran, #Kazakhstan, #Kuwait, #Morocco, #Nigeria, State of #Palestine, #SaudiArabia, #Senegal, #Thailand, United #Arab Emirates, #Venezuela & #Vietnam.
Pandor said this indicated recognition of BRICS as a champion of the global south, & the benefits of membership. South Africa’s BRICS ‘sherpa’ Anil Sooklal believes one reason for seeking membership now is the growing polarisation impelled by Russia’s war on Ukraine & rising United States-China tensions. These create #anxiety among smaller nations, & an impetus to seek “#security in numbers”.
Not all 6 African #governments that formally applied have officially confirmed this. Algeria, Egypt & Ethiopia have — but Nigeria, Senegal & Morocco’s positions are unclear.
Nigeria’s Ambassador to Russia, Abdullahi Shehu, was recently quoted as saying accession talks hadn’t commenced, but he didn’t rule out #future membership. However, Nigeria’s Guardian cites several experts as saying Nigeria isn’t ready for BRICS membership. They say it lacks economic sophistication — including having little to export to other BRICS countries besides #oil. Also, the new reformist Bola Tinubu #administration has much on its plate.
Nigeria #analyst & Chief Executive of Africa @ Work Dianna Games told ISS Today she was surprised to see Nigeria on the list, but added: “Tinubu is very proactive, so it’s possible he could be driving something like that, looking to spread influence because Nigeria has turned quite inwards under Buhari in foreign #policy, & perhaps he is trying to regain lost ground in terms of influence”.
What each African country hopes to get from BRICS is diverse & somewhat unclear.

Turkey Expresses Interest in Joining BRICS Bloc! 🇹🇷
After devoting years to pursuing EU membership, Turkey has recently stirred up the global diplomatic sphere by announcing its interest in joining the BRICS bloc. This significant shift in geopolitical strategy signals Turkey's willingness to explore new avenues for economic and political alliances amidst the evolving landscape of international relations.
The BRICS alliance, comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, represents a powerful economic bloc with immense potential for collaboration and mutual growth. Turkey's potential inclusion could not only reshape the dynamics within BRICS but also offer Turkey the opportunity to diversify its partnerships and strengthen its position on the global stage.
As Turkey sets its sights on broader horizons beyond the EU, this move underscores the country's strategic vision and adaptability in navigating the complexities of 21st-century geopolitics. It will be intriguing to observe how this development unfolds and the implications it may have on regional and global dynamics.

✒️ My latest paper discusses the outcome of the 9th Trilateral Summit of Cyprus, Greece and Israel that took place on September 4th, 2023.
📌 It also presents recent developments such as the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) that was announced during the G20 Summit in Delhi, and the way China and Turkiye reacted.
💡 Moreover it provides insight regarding the new era of economic peace that had begun to establish in the Middle East due to the Israel - Lebanon EEZ agreement and the signing of the Abraham Accords.

I'm curious. How should African states position themselves in International and Regional politics? Consider that in 10 years from now majority of SAs current government leadership will no longer be on the panel you speak of and neither will the rest of BRICS leaders. They will be too old or in the museums. What informs your opinions about the Youth of SA? Are you aware of the kind of young leaders being produced by South Africa? (Oh and please don't mention Julius Malema) Tell me what your facts about SAs young leaders. I think it would help me understand the opportunity cost African countries continue to endure. What positive outlooks can you share. I will personally adopt the most positive solutions you mention. I am enjoying the discussion.

as i read the news regarding BRICS group acceptance of new members like egypt .... i asked myself a question about the potential impact of Brics nations group on energy trading and particularly the hydrogen future.
The BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) nations group represents over 3.6 billion people, or around 40% of the world's population, and accounts for more than 20% of global GDP and much more attributes as a competing collation.
in terms of energy , BRICS countries have an imperative role to play in the global energy agenda in line with their share in the world’s energy production and consumption. BRICS As a major emerging economies have the potential to significantly influence energy trading and the transition to a low-carbon economy, including the development of hydrogen. Here are some ways in which the BRICS nations could impact energy trading and the hydrogen future:
1. Diversification of energy supplies: The BRICS countries have diverse energy resources, including fossil fuels, nuclear power, hydrocarbons, and renewable energy sources. They can leverage this diversity to reduce dependence on any single energy source and promote sustainable energy trade, potentially leading to greater energy security and reduced greenhouse gas emissions.
2. wide scale market for Increased demand for energy: With their large and growing populations, the BRICS countries will likely see a significant increase in energy demand in the coming years. This presents both challenges and opportunities for energy producers, particularly those focused on renewable energy. " egypt – KSA – Russian – Iran , UAE" can play here a major role.
3. Promoting regional energy integration: The BRICS countries can foster regional energy integration by strengthening energy ties and cooperating on energy infrastructure projects to enhance energy security, improve efficiency, and create new business opportunities.
4. Advancing renewable energy technologies: The BRICS countries have been investing heavily in renewable energy technologies, including solar, wind, and hydroelectric power. Collaboration among member states can accelerate innovation, drive down costs, and promote the adoption of these technologies globally. " much is expected from china and india"
5. Open a wide scale of investment portfolio among BRICS countries and between BRICS and other parts of the world " providing general access to cheap, reliable, sustainable and modern sources of energy / hydrogen production"
6. International collaboration on climate change: As major emitters, the BRICS countries have a shared interest in addressing climate change. By working together, they can promote international cooperation on climate issues, support the implementation of the Paris Agreement, and encourage other countries to adopt low-carbon pathways.
i think The coming decades will prove and give trust about BRICS steps and practical impact on the global world economy.

The Brics Group of nations has invited six new countries to join the bloc that has pledged to champion the "Global South". The debate over the expansion of BRICS - Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa - topped the agenda at the three-day summit in Johannesburg. While all BRICS members have publicly expressed support for expanding the five-member bloc, reports suggested divisions among the leaders over how much and how quickly.

South Africa's President Cyril Ramaphosa said that Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and UAE have been invited to join the BRICS as part of the first phase of expansion. The new membership will be effective from January 1, 2024
