Survival of breast cancer has improved for everyone in the U.S. in recent years, but the pace isn't the same for all groups of people. Some groups still experience dramatic disparities. The breast oncology team at Dana-Farber has several programs and initiatives that aim to address root causes of disparities in breast cancer screening, access to care, and breast cancer diagnosis. Sutter Health Cancer Care is investing in new technology from #Volpara to support our physicians and personalize care for our patients. According to the American Cancer Society, one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer during their lifetime. Breast cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer death in women. This makes it critical for women to not only receive regular mammography screenings, but to also understand their risk of developing breast cancer so they can get connected to additional care if necessary. A new risk analysis program at Sutter Health will help identify more high-risk patients for greater diagnoses of cancers at earlier stages. https://lnkd.in/gS3ZPmqE

Invasive breast cancer: doing better now than before. And things are looking more optimistic in the last few years with newer options… Early invasive breast cancer during the 1990s, the risk of death within 5 years of diagnosis was just over 14% on average. For women diagnosed during the 2010s, it was nearly 5% on average. And that "although deaths from breast cancer will continue to occur beyond this [5-year mark], the risk during each subsequent five-year period is likely to be lower than during the first five years." https://lnkd.in/ex4YfNb8

In a guest essay, Ami Jhaveri, MD, a medical oncologist at our Ann B. Barshinger Cancer Institute, wrote about the unique challenges facing young women who are diagnosed with breast cancer. Young women are being diagnosed at a higher incidence rate than in the past, she wrote, noting that 9 percent of all new cases of breast cancer in the United States are found in women younger than 45. Finding cancer early with screening mammograms makes cancers more likely to be cured and increases survival. Women should start routine screening mammograms at age 40 (earlier if indicated, based on family history or known genetic conditions).
