Thank you, Lt. Davis for sharing your impactful mental health message for public safety employees. It’s important to recognize when an officer's responses, attitudes, or behaviors are not consistent with their normal demeanor. Officers regularly encounter high stress environments, and witness some of the worst situations imaginable, carrying the cumulative stress with them. Its important to be aware of the signs and behaviors indicating something could be wrong. Leaders should take steps necessary to ensure officers remain confident that seeking help will not stigmatize or negatively impact their future. Untreated PTSI/D can lead to withdrawal from previously enjoyed activities, extreme hyper vigilance, difficulty concentrating, uncharacteristic emotional outbursts, (strong reaction to insignificant situation,) nightmares, and destructive behaviors. This adds to the stress, and overall impact to the officer's wellbeing; underscoring the importance of treatment and support. Officers should feel encouraged to ask for help knowing they have a strong support system behind them.

Audiences relate to the underdog because he represents the common man and his battles to overcome the huge challenges of life. His challenge often involves something bigger than him. The underdog effect taps into our deep-seated notions of fairness and justice. We love an underdog because their struggle echoes our own experiences and the challenges we've faced. By cheering for the underdog, we're rooting for the possibility that anything is possible. We're hoping that the little guy can win, even when the odds are stacked against them. Seeing someone overcome overwhelming obstacles to achieve success gives us a sense of optimism and faith in humanity. We find it very easy to identify with the underdog more than the elite. We think we're more like them. So, if the underdog wins, by extension, we win. It's also more exciting, especially for the neutral to want the unfavoured person to win.
