Thoughtful insight
Meet the man who built MRF into a 23,000 CR Tire Manufacturing Company. 1. 24-year-old K.M Mammen Mappillai was selling toy balloons on the streets of Madras. His father was in prison, and the family assets sealed. Mapillai had no other option until he saw something that made him curious. 🧐 2. A foreign company was supplying tread rubber, which made the old tyres smooth on roads and reusable after use. There was no Indian company which made this rubber. With all the money he saved by selling balloons, Mapillai started the Madras Rubber Factory (MRF) in 1952. 🚀 3. Mapillai got the first mover advantage, and in just four years, MRF had a 50% share in the rubber manufacturing business. MRF was in the big leagues now, but Mapillai wasn't happy. Every big player in the US was manufacturing tyres, but he wasn't. 4. He knew that India was not technically advanced enough to produce quality tyres. So, rather than kicking the competition out, he partnered with them. MRF partnered with Mansfield & Co. - An American multinational. After a year of failed experimentations, the first tyre came out. 🙌 5. Mapillai played another masterstroke this time - He took the company public on the Madras Stock Exchange in 1961 to get benefits of various government grants for public companies. 6. Mapillai set up MRF's first foreign office in Beirut to export his tyres. MRF created history by exporting to the US, the hub of all Tyres. An Indian company had achieved this feat for the first time, and the competition came all guns blazing. 👇 7. Goodyear, Firestone and the mighty Dunlop entered the market.MRF struggled to get even government contracts now. Its partnership with Mansfield ended because its tires were unsuitable for the Indian roads. While solving for the World, Mapillai was getting defeated in India. 🇮🇳 8. So, Mapillai set up a rubber research factory in Madras for the in-house manufacturing of tyres. He set up four more plants in Kottayam, Goa and Arrakonam. He expanded the product into Nylogrip tyres for two-wheelers and Superflug for trucks. The iconic MRF Muscleman was born, which showed MRF as a symbol of strength and durability. 💪 9. MRF was back on the road again, as smoothly as their tyres. It became a 3000 CR company by 2003. However, Mapillai did not relax this time. He established five more factories and expanded the business into Toys, Motorsports and Cricket. How can we forget Sachin Tendulkar with the MRF bat in his hand? 🏏 10. By 2007, MRF was a 7000 CR company. The Indian supergiant had even defeated Michelin - The largest tyre company in the World. It regained a 25% market share despite the entry of Apollo, JK Tyres and CEAT. 11. In 2023, MRF became a 23,000 CR company with exports in over 65 countries. In the same year, it became the first company with a stock price of Rs 1,00,000. MRF has made many Indians - "Millionaires". 💰 ➡️Mapillai is rightly called "The Tyre Man of India. " 🇮🇳 #startup #casestudy #india

Lest you think Japanese manufacturing quality is peerless and without fault, please see Exhibit A presented by UK cycling enthusiast and engineer, Hambini, who relates a case study about the flaws in over 2M Shimano cranks causing them to corrode and delaminate, potentially causing injury. Even more shocking is that the problem has existed /for eleven years/. Hambini is a fun watch, but do be aware he curses regularly, and as a regular viewer I can tell you not without cause as he routinely critiques the build quality of very expensive bikes and components from an engineering perspective. Shocking revelation: You can spend thousands and still get a garbage bike. In doing a quick search, I see that Shimano has a plant in China that opened in 1992, however the crank we see in the video is clearly stamped JAPAN. As a company, Shimano's history goes back to the 1920s in Osaka, first known as Shimano Iron Works, and later changing its name to Shimano Industrial in 1951. Unknown if any of their people would have attended Deming's lectures in 1950, but it is quite certain their current leadership is due for a refresher... #systemsthinking #leadership #deming #quality
