Happy Friday! We made it to the end of the week! A friend and colleague reached out to me earlier this week and asked for a good ice breaker with her team. I had discussed with her an excercise that would lead to discussing their “why” but with a deeper spin. So, today I wanted to be a little more human on LinkedIn. I’ve recently transitioned into a position creating partnerships between post acute communities and agency support staff after ten plus years in the senior living industry, where I had been at a regional level the last 4 (which in these years seem like 7). When I was looking for my next position I had applied for a few different openings, and most were not senior living. I had a few months to really think about my next steps, priorities, strengths of my own, and where I could make an impact. I’m recently divorced, have two kids and had been traveling at least 60% of the time as well. When I interviewed with the staffing agency, I was literally answering questions in reverse. In executive level positions - the question is “how do you get agency out of the communities” - almost always a top 3. Now here I was answering why would an organization partner with a agency. I am a leader that has to have purpose in what I do everyday. I have invested years in my education, communities and teams - so I had to pick a position I truly believed in. Here’s my why today for what I do: 1. I chose a position I could be at home more with my children. One which is about to graduate. 2. I want to help the administrator who is about to quit because they are frustrated at their desk everyday. 3. I want the DON not have to work the floor everyday so she can do her job. 4. I want to help the regional not have to hang their license again and manage 6 other communities. 5. I want to help the team on the floor (they can do some great restorative with the help) 🤣, because man do I miss leading a team. Those aides and nurses work hard. 6. I want residents to be cared for. 7. I want to celebrate 🎉 with communities after they no longer need support staff and have successfully recruited and onboarded their own team. - I have done this using contracted, true travel staff. This transition has been challenging and one of growth, but sometimes you just have to remember your why. I couldn’t do what I’m doing if I was just waking up and trying to staff a building. I understand the culture, resident, team and financial responsibilities in senior living. I like to do things differently. This is why I say partnership, not dependency.
