We are overlooking the potential impact of 35% of our food production. 🌱 Carbon credit verification, precision ag SaaS tools, heavy machinery and more are designed for 100+ hectare farms. Smallholder farmers (holding 10 hectares or less) produce over a third of the world’s food and 80% of the food in the Global South. And building solutions for them can help keep us below 1.5 ̊. Did you know: 🌍 Smallholder farming represents 32% of agricultural emissions (8% of the global total). 🌳 72% of tropical deforestation stems from smallholder agriculture. Carbon credits are the main incentive that’s been pursued so far, but agriculture still represents only 1% of the carbon market. We are in need of new solutions that can scale regenerative agriculture and other innovations more quickly, and more profitably for farmers. (The photo below was taken earlier this year in Côte d'Ivoire, chatting solutions with cacao farmers.) #regenerativeagriculture #smallholderfarmers #climatechange #agtech #cacao

🌍 Did you know: The population of #SubSaharanAfrica is set to double by 2050, reaching 1.2 billion people! Amidst this growth, smallholder farmers play a crucial role, producing 80% of the food consumed across the continent. 🌱 Learn how #Seeds2B, a groundbreaking initiative by the Syngenta Foundation for Sustainable Agriculture, in collaboration with the Partnership for Seed technology Transfer in Africa (#PASTTA), is enhancing access to high-quality seeds to support farmers and improve food security ⬇️ https://ow.ly/jSo650PG4c0

Our Market Development Facility (MDF) recently surveyed nearly 100 of Tonga's vanilla farmers, revealing some valuable insights for the sector. Did you know that most farmers in Tonga are growing on only one acre of land? And few farmers use store bought 'agri-inputs' such as pesticides and herbicides. Instead, they're spending their money on land preparation and labour. MDF promotes sustainable economic development, through higher incomes for women and men, in our partner countries across the Pacific. Data like this helps us do that. The potential launch of a new Better Cotton program in Chad suggests a positive step toward more sustainable cotton farming in the area. Better Cotton, in collaboration with Cotontchad and the Sustainable Trade Initiative (IDH), engaged in fruitful discussions about the future of cotton sustainability in the region. A recent multistakeholder event in N’Djamena convened various entities crucial to Chad's cotton industry—national ministries, farmer representatives, private sectors, and civil society organizations. This dialogue aimed to address challenges and opportunities for sustainable agriculture in the region. Cotontchad's role in supporting 200,000 smallholder farmers has been transformative. Through their support, cotton yields surged remarkably from 17,500 metric tons in 2019 to over 145,000 MT in 2022, contributing significantly to Chad's cotton landscape. I'm excited to see how these organizations collaborate to help shape a more sustainable future in Chad's cotton industry! Great example of how local knowledge, targeted investment and support can overcome geographical constraints. Plenty of lessons to be shared and learned in other nascent agricultural sectors - like here in Nauru!

🎯While we recognized that every seed planted by smallholder farmers is a promise for a sustainable food future. 🎯There are supply and demand constraints within Early Generations Seeds (EGS) systems which act as bottlenecks in the production, distribution and adoption of improved maize seeds among Africa’s rural farmers 🎯Check out this research paper which explores to understand these bottlenecks and to provide solutions to facilitate production, commercialization and adoption of improved seeds for agricultural productivity among farmers. 🌾🌱 ⤵️ https://lnkd.in/eKBfRXJS #AgriculturalProductivity #ClimateResilience #ImprovedSeeds #AgInnovation #AgTech #SmallholderFarmers #Agvaluechain
