The growing season is underway at the Dakota County Juvenile Services Center! Juvenile Services program participants recently joined with University of Minnesota Extension master gardeners and Dakota County leaders to plant a garden that will provide fruits and vegetables for Dakota County food shelves. Board Chair, Joe Atkins, Dakota County Commissioner Bill Droste, along with Community Corrections Director Suwana Kirkland, Deputy Director Matt Bauer, and Director of Community Services Marti Fischbach helped with planting the garden, located outside the Juvenile Services Center in Hastings. This is the third year of the program, which generated over 500 pounds of food last year. Most of the food was donated to food shelves, though some was consumed by youth in the New Chance Program and at the Juvenile Services Center. Over 500 pounds were donated to food shelves from the garden in 2023. Some of the harvest produce was consumed by youth in the New Chance Program and the JSC secure facility.
