A world where produced prescriptions, nutritionists-formulated meals and more will be on the table. 🧬 A recent report from Rockefeller Foundation and Tufts University studied what could be the impact in healthcare cost. If patients on Medicare, Medicaid and private insurance with diet-related conditions like diabetes ate food nutritionally designed to stimulate their recovery, an estimated 1.6 million hospitalizations could be avoided annually. There could even be an estimated net savings of $13.6 billion in healthcare costs in the first year alone. Is this fantastic? Could vegetables play a role on it? PepsiCo is setting a new sodium reduction goal, with category targets that consider guidance from public health experts including the World Health Organization and are approximately 15-30% lower than the company's current target for key convenient food categories. Excess sodium intake is a leading risk factor for diet-associated disease and disability, prompting global public health authorities to call on the food industry to reduce sodium in their products. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends less than 2000mg of sodium per day for adults. Our new sodium goal aims for a 15% sodium reduction in our U.S. Lay's Classic Potato Chips, which would result in a sodium level of 140mg per 28g serving. "Food industry and public health representatives … both contribute to the creation of the food label as a governmental strategy that depends on free-market logics to secure individual and population health. While criticism of ‘Big Food’ has become a growth industry in academic publishing and research, wider critique is needed that also includes the activities of public health. Such a critique needs to address the normalizing effect of neoliberal governmentality within which both the food industry and public health operate to reinforce individuals as ‘healthy consumers’. Drawing on Michel Foucault’s lectures at the Collège de France, I examine the food label through the lens of governmentality. I argue that the rationale operating through the food label combines nutrition science and free-market logics to normalize subjects as responsible for their own health and reinforces the idea of consumption as a means to secure population health from diet-related chronic diseases.” 

This week the World Health Organization published the results of a study that found significant differences in the health impacts of certain “ultra-processed” foods. The study shows that processed animal meat and sweetened drinks are linked to increased risk of multiple chronic health conditions, while other “ultra-processed” foods – including plant-based meats – were not found to pose those health risks. As more consumers focus on health and wellness, it’s essential that we dispel misinformation around the health benefits and nutritional value of plant-based meats. Consumers should be equipped to make decisions that are best for them and their health, and the more education we can do around what terms like “ultra-processed” actually mean the better equipped they will be. 

The FDA is exploring the implementation of front-of-package warning labels on foods high in salt, sugar, and saturated fats to address the rising rates of diet-related health problems in the U.S., such as type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Drawing on the success of Chilé's similar labeling law, which resulted in a 23.8% reduction in calories purchased from labeled products, the FDA aims to help consumers make healthier choices despite pushback from the food industry. Leading researcher Camila Corvalán emphasizes that clear, visual labels can significantly influence purchasing decisions, as evidenced by a 36.7% decrease in sodium purchases in Chilé after label implementation. Evidence-Based: Plant-Based Foods Reign Supreme for Your Health

The pushback was one of the clearest examples of the debate playing around the world regarding how to address ultra-processed foods. Countries from Brazil to the Nordic nations have also considered whether they should recommend limits on that consumption. The debate is especially tricky because the most commonly used classification system for ultra-processed foods, which has been endorsed by the World Health Organization, has been criticized as "overly broad". I can understand that definitions are important, that definitions can help separate one item from another, but the truth is - while we squabble about UPFs or what exactly is unhealthy in "unhealthy diet", multinationals around the globe keep on selling products that harm the health of our children, our communities, our planet. #CDoH #commercialdeterminants #UPFs #UPPs #BeatNCDs #corporations #corporatebehaviour
